As I reflect on 23+ years in the mortgage industry, I've had the amazing privilege of getting to know a lot of people and letting a lot of people get to know me. During my time as a Loan Officer, Branch Manager, Area, Regional and the last few years Leading Production Nationally, my responsibilities the last 10-15 years have centered around company growth and recruiting of Productive, Professional, Loan Officers and Branch Managers (www.trinityoaksmortgage.com). I have however, felt like that child in the quote above more often than not and I've fell down more times than I care to count! They key is not letting your circumstances keep you down. We Promise to Listen - As a Production Leader, growth is critical. You see, I never was trained to be a recruiter. I never attended recruiting classes. I was never coached or given books on recruiting. It's never been modeled for me, I'm self-taught, through thousands of phone calls, coffee meet-ups, lunches, dinners, planes and hotel rooms in cities I don't even remember being in over the years. I've FAILED more times than I've succeeded. Through my failures, I've learned. A lot. I've learned that not everyone in mortgage is motivated by money. I've learned that the motivation and needs of mortgage professionals change as they progress through their careers, mine did. Some are all about how much compensation they can make, some want less compensation and better pricing, some have had terrible compliance and operations experiences and just want a great support team behind them to give them confidence again. Some have had bad management or leadership that just treated them as a number and not a person and they just want their voice to be heard and have a seat at the table.

Ernest Hemingway once said, "Listen, most people don't really listen." They like to talk or hear themselves talk so they can impart their wisdom upon you and show you how smart they are but they never truly listen and hear what you have to say. In recruiting, this is a fatal flaw. Now I'm a sales guy by nature and trust me, I love to talk. I'm passionate about what I do and I sure want to tell you and everyone else about it, but I've also learned to listen...it's taken a long career to hone that skill but I'm making progress!

We Want to Know Your Why: Through all of this, I've learned to ask candidates I speak with "Why?". What is your "Why"? Why are you in this business? Why do you put yourself through the pain that comes with the complexity of a mortgage transaction for a living? Why are you looking to change companies? Why are WE on the phone today?

By finding someone's true "Why" or at least attempting to, its allowed me to tailor my approach to hone in on WHAT is truly important to them and then explain how Trinity Oaks Mortgage solves their problem. We have 4 CORE VALUES that we live by: (1.)
