12 Years in the Making: Co-Hosting the Historic 13th African Games Opening Ceremony

A Dream Manifested

When LEAP Creative Studio extended the invitation for me to co-host the Opening Ceremony of the 13th African Games, it felt like the pages of a journal entry I had penned with unyielding ambition back in late July 2012 were suddenly brought to life. Here was an opportunity to turn a dream I had nurtured for 12 years into a reality—a chance to stand at the forefront of an event that not only showcased the pinnacle of athletic prowess but also symbolized unity and celebration on a continental scale. The magnitude of the moment was undeniable, igniting within me a sense of purpose and determination unlike anything I had ever experienced.

From Inspiration to Aspiration

Back then, as I sat mesmerized by the grandeur of the London 2012 Olympic Games' opening ceremony, the melodic and powerful voice of the female announcer, later revealed to be the incomparable Trish Bertram, captivated my senses. Her voice, with its eloquence and her crystal-clear enunciation, resonated deep within me, stirring an indescribable feeling of awe and inspiration. In that moment, the vision of becoming the voice guiding the procession of athletes, as they proudly showcased their flags and waved to their nations, seeped deep into my soul. I wrote it down, etching it into my aspirations, knowing that one day, I too would stand on a stage, channeling that same sense of grandeur and unity through the power of my voice.

A Moment of Significance

As the hands of time propelled me forward to Friday, March 8 2024, I found myself standing on the precipice of a momentous occasion: entrusted with the solemn duty of uniting the continent through the unifying power of sport as the co-host of the Opening Ceremony of the 13th African Games. In that fleeting moment, there was an almost tangible, spiritual essence—a profound convergence of aspiration and opportunity that seemed to envelop me in its embrace.

To label this experience as merely a "dream come true" would be an injustice, for it transcended the boundaries of mere fantasy. It was a testament to the unwavering conviction and relentless pursuit of a vision that had been etched into the very fabric of my being. The overwhelming sense of honor, humility, and immense responsibility that surged through my veins was palpable, reaffirming my belief in the power of perseverance and determination.

It marked a historic milestone as Ghana assumed the esteemed role of hosting the African Games for the first time since its inception in 1965. As I stood in the University of Ghana stadium and heard my voice over the loud speakers, I felt an undeniable sense of pride swell within me, knowing that I was part of something greater than myself—a moment that would be etched into the annals of history and celebrated for generations to come.

The dazzling display of culture, unity, and athletic spirit at the vibrant opening ceremony.
