12 years of data traffic in a single month

12 years of data traffic in a single month

In March 2006, the UN declared that the 17 May would become the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day, also known as Internet Day. In the wake of the health crisis, 15 years later, this celebration is more relevant than ever.

The era of hyper-connectivity has gained momentum due to the exceptional situation caused by COVID-19, putting the telco sector at the centre of perhaps the most disruptive revolution in history, thus inevitably transforming the way things are done in all aspects of our daily lives.

Life has become fully digital. Today, Telefónica's networks carry people's lives, with a monthly traffic volume comparable to that of the total amount of traffic accumulated during the first 12 years of Internet use.

In Spain, this traffic has grown by more than 40% in just 12 months, boosted by the high-capacity connections that are present in almost 90% of homes. There are currently more than 46 billion Internet users around the world and more than 43 billion of these connect through their smartphones.

This is possible thanks to digital infrastructures that are constantly evolving towards fibre and 5G. The widespread mobile devices, cloud and edge computing, quantum computing, artificial intelligence, robotics, drones, virtual or augmented reality and the Internet of Things, are just some of the revolutions within the revolution, driven by outstanding connectivity.

Everything revolves around the essential role of communication networks. Developing a smarter infrastructure will also ensure sustainability across the board as we keep green ambitions in sight. We are committed to making the most advanced telecommunications networks available to our customers whilst reducing our emissions and helping customers and society to do the same.

This is why today, I want to congratulate those working across the sector, alongside the professionals who drive it forward every day, thus ensuring that when the physical world came to a halt, life could go on in the digital world. Happy World Telecommunication and Information Society Day. Today is our day.
