Here’s 12 things compassion did for my business this year. I hope some of this resonates with you:
- I increased some timelines to generate more realistic deadlines I could actually stick to in order to set myself up for success.
- I used to have a “Tony Robbins” SUPER INTENSE kind of morning routine, but this year if I only did 2 things before I began my kick-ass workday, it was meditation and movement.??
- Compassion helped some of my competition become collaborators, and 2 collaborators became clients.?An unexpected yet delightful outcome! ??????
- I launched the first mindful business community
CoMuse
for Music + Tech, all by word of mouth, a dream of mine that I’ve been dreaming into reality for years.?We've had some of the MOST incredible members join us and we’re just getting started!?
- I practiced open-hearted curiosity, which led me on a creative journey to a lot of “firsts”: collaborating on a comic book project, co-wrote/sang/recorded/released a jazz single with my (extremely talented) husband, finally finished Dune, took a modern dance class, painted on canvas, beaded an intricately braided necklace, bought some NFTs, took a COVID-deferred honeymoon to the Napa Valley.?All of these lended themselves to even more creative energy and JOY in my work and life.
- I learned that autoimmune disease and chronic pain are my teachers (not my enemies!) and helped me to pay close attention to the directions I chose, which aided me in prioritizing my time.
- I had the privilege of growing a team of 4 talented, compassionate women in music and media who helped me see the power of compassionate leadership
Marisha Legan-Johnson
Nicole McKay
Taylor Engle Anderson
Bridget Ambrose
?
- I served on a board and as a consultant to help organizations in their org design strategies realize sustainable success doesn’t alway have to be painful, and if done correctly, can be beautiful, creative, motivating and inspiring!
- Being in conflict with others (or with myself) was something to work through not run away from.?Staying “at the table” diffused any conflict and has greatly reduced my stress levels this year.
- I don’t believe everything I think:?I used to say that “selling compassion is a hard sell” but I’ve grown my business YOY for the past 5 years so I don’t think that’s an accurate statement.
- Compassion beats fear over becoming irrelevant every time.?In one way or another, every Creative fears becoming irrelevant.?Compassion reminded me that mindful-self awareness, kindness and human connection are the things I could hang my hat on.?Operating from compassion is where I made my most successful and thoughtful business decisions.
- I found many more ways to laugh this year, laugh with myself (not take myself too seriously), laugh with others, watch more comedies, laughing yoga, laughter… it has not only brought more joy, but more creative energy to my work.
- BONUS I learned how to ask and receive help (still have a long way to go on this one).?I realized that others in my life want to serve too, and it’s perfectly ok to not be the people pleaser/fixer/therapist all the time.?Sometimes it’s ok to need people too.
Because of my health, I’ve had less energy this year than in years prior, yet I’ve been able to create so much.?The only way I know to explain this is compassion has been the key for me.?
How has compassion been good for your business this year?
