As we prioritize our overall well-being, it's imperative that wellness becomes a fundamental aspect of our travel plans. This encompasses a variety of wellness offerings such as wellness tourism, spa treatments, rejuvenating thermal and mineral springs, traditional and alternative medicine practices, personal care routines, physical activity, and nourishing eating habits.
The Global Wellness Summit, a premier platform for the convergence of thought leaders and innovators in the wellness industry, recently published its Future of Wellness Report which features the 12 most significant trends in wellness for the year 2023.
The trend of "Wellness Addresses the Loneliness Pandemic" highlights the growing recognition of the significance of social wellness in overall health and wellness. As a result, the wellness industry, as well as broader society, is now taking steps to address this long-neglected aspect of wellness. This shift includes returning to traditional wellness principles infused with a contemporary approach incorporating multisensory integration. In addition, the wellness market is evolving to become more evidence-based and focused, with an emphasis on urban design, hospitality, and government policies.
“Wellness in 2023 (and beyond) will be more serious and science-backed, but also more social and sensory,” said Susie Ellis , GWS Chair and CEO.
In 2023, the most significant wellness trend will be spaces and experiences that bring people together, moving from lonely to social self-care and from buying to belonging. In terms of wellness and travel, people are now seeking much deeper cultural experiences and showing interest in going to the source of ancient healing and knowledge.
In the workplace, superficial wellness schemes are being replaced with more meaningful solutions in response to the rise of burnout and job dissatisfaction. In the beauty industry, there is a shift towards data-backed products and lab-tested science-backed and lab-created products.
In cities, urban wellness infrastructure is seen as a necessity rather than a luxury and is being embraced as a solution for post-pandemic recovery and cultivating healthier citizens. In terms of weight, the ability to live longer and "younger" is a trend in medicine and wellness, focusing on transforming white/yellow fat into beige/brown fat to tackle obesity. Finally, there is a case for governments to come together and implement wellness policies.
