12 More Reasons to Attend the 6th Annual WWDVC
Sanjay Pande
Chief of Marketing and Product Strategy at Data Vault Alliance, Data Vault 2.0 Authorized Instructor, DV 2.0 Certified Master
If you’re a program manager, project manager, team leader, business intelligence specialist, data integration expert, data warehouse developer, data modeller, data engineer or even a data scientist then this is for you ...
Here's Why:
The 6th annual World Wide Data Vault Consortium is slated to happen this May in beautiful Stowe, VT and is considered one of the most important events to attend in the Business Intelligence space. There are a few things that make this event unique and fun and why it consistently attracts repeat attendees.
1. The People - Both the audience and the speakers at this event are amazing. If you've ever spoken at this event, you can feel the brain power in the room. It's no coincidence that it has attracted people like Scott Ambler, Bill Inmon, Peter Aiken, Tom Bruer, John Giles, Roelant Vos, Kent Graziano, Tamara Dull, Peter Avenant, Claudia Imhoff and so many more. It's no surprise that many of them choose to return.
2. The Best Networking in the Industry - How many times can you say, you ran an idea past the father of data warehousing; or the person who invented the data vault; or and industry figure. More importantly, how about getting connected with people who have already solved a problem you have … and that too in the same vertical you work. Just bouncing ideas of each other will benefit both of you. All this and more magic already happens at this event.

3. Pre-conference vendor workshops - How many times do you get to experience automation tools firsthand? This year, the lineup includes a hands-on session on BimlFlex, a hand-on session by Talend, and another one by WhereScape.
These vendors usually charge for these sessions. But, it’s included in your ticket price.
4. Pre-conference sessions - Even before the conference starts you get a brainstorming session and a panel discussion with Dan himself and with most of the DV 2.0 certified instructors. You would have to pay a lot to get all of them in one room.
But again, this is included in your ticket price.
And in addition to this, there’s something new called Data Vault games. I actually don’t even know what this is going to be, but I'm sure it will be fun.
5. Bill Inmon - The father of data warehousing himself will be at this event. This is his 3rd time in the last 6 years and it would be his second consecutive year. Last year he spoke about textual data and how 3rd party textual datasets can be used to glean a ton of information about how your organization is doing. This time, he’ll dive deeper into textual analytics. In the unstructured data world, text has a lot of information embedded in it and it’s worth listening to this industry stalwart talk about something that most people don’t even think of.
In fact, many people think it’s way beyond what most of the people do with simple sentiment analyses. I would not miss this session. I recommend you don’t either.
6. Eric Kavanagh - This well known luminary in the field of big data will share how artificial intelligence will shape our futures include problems, issues and successes.

7. Data as an Asset - This has been a consistent theme in pretty much all the Data Vault conferences. There’s a reason the term “Data Vault” sounds like a place where you bank your data. However, to make the most of it, you should look at an enterprise-level ontology.
“But, what the heck is that?” you may ask.
And John Giles - author of “The Nimble Elephant” will show us here
https://wwdvc.com/sessions/wednesday-fast-ontology/
Just in this session, you’ll get:
- Demystification of the term “enterprise ontology”
- Why and when to build a top-down enterprise view
- The approach to fast-&-good building of your own enterprise ontology (or refactoring the one you wish you hadn’t inherited!)
- And, even pointers to some jump-start resources
8. Stream data into a DV - Real Time has come a long way from micro-batching. There are now not only streaming tools but even in-stream analytics. Where do the pieces fit?
Why and how would you stream data into a Data Vault?
Authorized instructor Bruce McCartney will show you in this session
https://wwdvc.com/sessions/thursday-stream-processing-dv/
The presentation will also give attendees a good understanding of the basics required to accomplish streaming and exposure to several different development paradigms available. The focus will be in using SQL stream processing to accomplish this, and give a customer example of an approach taken.
- discover the architecture and methods for streaming data
- What you must to with your raw DV when you have to deal with NRT datasets.
- Alternatives you can do with a Business DV for streaming
- How to use stream processing into a data lake
- Does DV 2.0 fit into what is called a Data Lake?
9. Data Vault in the Cloud - Data Vault 2.0 master and Snowflake DB expert Kent Graziano will present modern innovations in cloud databases which help DV 2.0 based solutions.
https://wwdvc.com/sessions/thursday-snowflakedb/
In this session, you’ll discover
- How to make your solution more agile, flexible and scalable.
- Techniques to hyper-parallelize and automatically scale load processes
- Use this to easily include JSON in your Data Vault
- Why you should load using multi-table inserts
- How you can easily separate PII data
- Advantages of using MD5 hash functions
- How you should virtualize your Information Marts
10. Test Automation - The largest provider of property and casualty insurance in Canada has been using Data Vault 2.0 for a while and they’ve hit every possible bottleneck there is to hit when you try to automate everything.
They even ended up building an automated testing framework which they talked about last year and many people considered it one of the highlights of the event. This year, they’re back to share even more about their automation processes.
This presentation alone is worth at least a few times the price of admission. Easily.

- People: New skills and paradigm

- Data Security Assessment Process
- Data Provisioning Challenges
- Problem: Set-based Data Provisioning=A fast road to chaos
- Answer: Policy-based Data Provisioning = A manageable solution
This is another presentation that many people would pay to attend. It’s included.

12. Data Vault at University - We’ve had universities like Yale present before, but this year is a first of its kind. A presentation by actual university students and how they’re using Data Vault 2.0 in a student led environment.
