12 Monkeys is an American Television Series based on a 1995 Hollywood movie of the same name starring Bruce Willis & Brad Pitt. I saw the first episode of the series and it got me hooked.
The story is, that in the year 2017, a deadly virus (plague) gets released, killing 93.6% of world's population (which is close to 7 billion) and causing the civilization to collapse. The remaining people, some of whom are naturally immune to the virus are trying their best to find a cure for the virus.
Whereas a team of scientists lead by Jones in 2043 succeed in developing a time machine which is capable of teleporting humans into the past and hence they recruit a young man named James Cole to go back in time and kill Leland Frost who was responsible for the creation of the virus which killed everyone. Effectively changing the future and ushering in an era without virus, thereby restoring the lives of 7 billion humans.
Now I am a science fiction buff but I know that time machine can't be a reality. What can be a reality however is the creation of a 'man-made-plague' which could kill billions of people in no time. Dr. Eckard Wimmer a researcher at University of New York has proven that its possible now to create extremely complicated (and dangerous might I add) micro-organisms.
Now this poses a real threat because pharmaceutical companies who aren't able to find cure to already existing diseases or the ones who are simply greedy, can manufacture such viruses in the hope of selling the cure once people start dying and the panic spreads.
Smaller countries who lack the military power to fight with the big boys in the conventional ways are likely to use this technology to make biological weapons and once things go out of hand, who knows what can happen?
Well I wonder what is it that people like you & me are supposed to do in this matter? because if such a virus is released by some anti social/greedy elements of the society, we would be sitting ducks who won't even see it coming.
The creators of '12 Monkeys' have done a wonderful job of spreading the awareness amongst the general population so I would encourage you folks to watch the series because besides giving a good message, its also highly entertaining.
