12 Lessons in 12 Months on YouTube
Today marks one full year of me posting weekly videos on YouTube on my Truly Social series. And what a year it's been!
As I said in last week's video, I dragged my feet for 7+ years on starting a YouTube web series, which is a pity because those who started even 3-4 years ago have been able to grow with the platform. But it's definitely not too late and there are all sorts of opportunities for content creators on YouTube. Now that I've seen the results first hand, I've become a huge advocate for others to shift to video - especially if you are a professional with something to teach.
Included in the 12 lessons are things like "it's easier than it looks" and "it's also harder than it looks", the importance of consistency, and knowing your audience.
What I didn't include is my use of LinkedIN as a platform. I didn't include it because it's an outlier for me. I was lucky enough to be invited to the Influencer program WAY back in 2009 when my book came out (they were inviting authors, CEO's, speakers, thought leaders), and LinkedIN has done a lot to help me grow my business audience.
People often ask me my advice about moving their blogs to LinkedIN since I've grown such a large audience here and I tell them that I can't comment either way. It's been enormously advantageous for me and I get the bulk of my video views from embedding them here, but if you don't already have an audience on LinkedIN, that will be two networks you need to cultivate. That being said, if your audience is business focused, LinkedIN is probably a better bet than Medium or Tumblr or any other content host, but remember that we are building our brands on someone else's properties.
I hope you enjoy this week's video. It was fun to make. It's also a little longer than usual, but I try to keep the pace up so you don't notice. ;) Thank you for a GREAT first year! You rock! Keep sending me those questions! As I say in the video, send them to me in video form and I'll integrate them into future edits.

Truly Social is a web series that you can share with your boss or client when they're not really "getting" social. It's also the name of my company - where I work with clients on helping them develop their own web series.
I've been working on this social stuff for over 16 years and I've been a participant in the social web since 1992. My videos will come out every SUNDAY...with ~5 minute "lessons" on what are truly social practices (and what are NOT).

8 年I really liked this video. Congratulations on a year of Truly Social! #8 was really a terrific instructional on the importance of optimization and distribution. I think you can make a video just on this point if you haven't already.

8 年I'm so amazed how it looks easy for you to make this videos, but now knowing that you went through the same processes that us, beginners, are going through, just give us more strength. Thank you very much for this video. How can I send you E-mails questioning things? I only know you from LikedIn =( Ah, and your videos are a life saver, although not everything applies to other countries, but thank you anyways =)

8 年Great tips! And a bonus like from me as this is the first YouTube video I've seen via LinkedIn which was fully captioned!
