If you are new to the online learning environment, there are certain terms you would come across regularly. We have put together this list to help you get familiar with these terms.?
1.????Asynchronous(non-simultaneous) learning
This is a learning process where students learn at their own time and pace. Examples include online learning (watching pre-recorded lecture videos or lessons).
2.????Blended learning
This is an educational curriculum that combines traditional(face-to-face) learning and online learning. An example is face-to-face teaching followed by online discussions.
3.????Distance education
Also called distance learning. This is a learning process where the teacher and the learner are separated by both distance and time. There is no face-to-face interaction. ?
4.????Education technology
Edtech is the combination of computer hardware and software (including mobile applications, websites) and all other technologies to automate and improve traditional education. It includes the use of pictures, audio recordings, videos, and interactive infographics to learn.
5.????Gamification ?
It is the process of adopting game mechanics in a learning process to improve engagement and motivate learners. This includes getting rewards or badges for completing tasks, rankings, leaderboards etc.
6.????Learning Management system
Also called a course management system, it is a software application used to plan, create, deliver and monitor a learning process.

7.???Mobile learning
This is learning that takes place on a mobile device. Mobile phones, laptops and tablets that allow you to access a learning platform and take courses on the go.
8.????Module
A module is a basic block from a course. It is a unit or segment of a course that has been broken down. It could be a reading, a video, an audio recording or an assessment. For instance, the course could be Mathematics and a module is “whole numbers” or “percentages”.
9.????Online assessment
This is a tool used to measure a student’s understanding of a particular subject. It can be conducted through CBTs (Computer Based Test), this is an assessment that is taken with the aid of a computer as opposed to a written test.
10.?SME- Subject Matter Expert
These are the teacher in online learning. An SME is someone who has vast knowledge about a particular topic or subject. They are the ones who deliver educational content to learners through learning platforms.
11.?Synchronous(concurrent) learning
A learning style where the teachers and learners are in the same physical location and learning takes place at the same time.
12.?Video conferencing
It refers to the use of video technology software to hold live audio-visual classes/ courses with people in different geographical locations.
