Rule 2 - BENCHMARK?
It won't come as a great surprise that to provide direction, you need to know the starting point. This also plays a key part in measuring and celebrating achievement, which can be fundamental to motivating those involved in a transformation programme. You therefore need to understand and quantify your current position so that targets and objectives can then be agreed and their success measured.
These targets and objectives ideally need to be 'SMART' (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Resourced and Timeframed) and there is an argument that you can't do this unless you properly understand the current position - the 'As Is' state that many will refer to.

Interview management, staff, customers and stakeholders as part of this benchmarking process. This is a consultative process and helps achieve buy-in from staff from the very start of the programme whilst providing an insight to both technical and cultural challenges. This discovery exercise will often allow you to spot some quick wins that can be implemented immediately. It's actually been known for such quick wins to finance the whole transformation programme by improving processes and efficiency or spotting something that could have later created considerable risk.
