A Case Study on AWS Cloud Migration for Utility Bill Payment Platform
Background: Mobile Distribution, a financial services provider since 1997, launched a utility bill payment service for its partner shop network in Romania. In 2020, they expanded with a B2C mobile app, un-doi.ro , allowing customers to pay bills easily from home. However, the company's cloud infrastructure, originally set up in 2013, struggled to support the growing business, risking data loss, performance issues, and high maintenance costs.
Challenge: The company needed to evolve its infrastructure to support continuous growth without compromising data integrity, performance, or security. The primary challenge was planning and executing a smooth migration to a new environment with minimal downtime, which is critical for the mission-essential utility bill payment system. Additionally, secure connections with third parties needed to be reestablished without disrupting user activity.

Solution: AWS Cloud Migration - We recommended a “lift-tinker-and-shift” strategy to migrate to AWS Cloud, enhancing availability, scalability, and security while reducing costs. Key optimisations included:
- migration to Amazon RDS for database services
- SQS for message queuing
- Amazon ElastiCache for Redis for fully managed Redis services
- Amazon ECS for container orchestration.
A Proof of Concept (POC) was created using Infrastructure as Code (IaaC) for easy replication. The migration was rigorously tested to ensure minimal risk and downtime, with careful coordination with third-party providers to ensure a smooth transition. The best migration time frame was determined in collaboration with the customer.
