12 factors pulling you away from being intentional Bright, Bold & Board leaders.

12 factors pulling you away from being intentional Bright, Bold & Board leaders.

Just when this is really needed to lead in the current business landscape.?

Leading an intended Business and Digital transformation through ongoing disruption has become the reality for most leaders at this time.?

It’s not for the feint hearted. Or the easily distracted.?

This article is relevant for Digital Transformation experts, accountable Executives and Operating leaders, and the Governing leaders on the Board or Steering body.?

I have never met a business leadership group that intended to be MAD (Meek, Abdicated, Dull) rather than BBB (Bright Sparks, Bold Executives, Discerning Board).

You choose to lead in an environment with a lot of pull to not truly lead. The pull to not truly lead is like being influenced by a gravitational force - if we don’t push against it with intention, we just go where it pulls us.

This does not always serve us or others!

Whether in a Boardroom, Exec suite or lunchroom, the observation always comes up that there are increasing distractions in our increasingly connected digital lives.

The more accomplished leaders, with strong intentions for their business, look at this with me, the more acknowledgment that the pull away from the Bright, Bold & Board is increasing, and we are all susceptible.?

~ Cal Newport

“The double meaning of the word ‘wired’. It means both being in a manic, hyper mental state, and being online.”
~ Johann Hari

?

Let’s take a summary look at 12 deeper factors pulling away from intention, utilising the extensive up-to-date research and insights of Johann Hari, author of ‘Stolen Focus: Why You Can’t Pay Attention’.?

?

  1. The increase in Speed, Switching and Filtering (picture yourself on your devices, or perhaps your teenager).
  2. The Crippling of our Flow States (picture pigeons trained to desperately crave arbitrary rewards as the dominant psychology versus the deeper focus of artists/ athletes etc in flow).
  3. The rise of physical and mental exhaustion (reflect on your sleep patterns and depth).
  4. The collapse of sustained reading (picture browsing the net, scrolling your media feed).
  5. The disruption of mind-wandering (reflect on when you last had space for daydreaming?!)
  6. The rise of technology that can track and manipulate you (reflect how you know software is designed to activate psychological loops and how connected you are).
  7. The rise of cruel optimism (picture that you alone won’t be enough to shift your personal habits with technology).
  8. The surge in stress and how it triggers vigilance (picture our brains and the primitive areas activated when stressed).
  9. Our deteriorating diets (picture the modern diet and reflect on the quality of the fuel for our body and minds).
  10. Rising pollution (picture the pollution you are aware of and imagine the pollution that you are not that makes its way into our food and breathing).
  11. The rise of ADHD and how we are responding to it (picture reacting with treatments on a topic that is not yet fully understood).
  12. The confinement of our children, both physically and psychologically (picture exploring, creating without guidance, learning by trial and error versus always being in controlled environments).
