“So far, 12 candidates have died in the physical tests at different centres. Yesterday, even the Chief Minister asked me to find out the reason why such things are happening. Police have lodged UD (unnatural death) cases and are waiting for the post-mortem report. We are trying to find out whether the deaths have taken place due to some disease, mismanagement at the centres or consumption of something,” Mr. Anurag Gupta [Jharkhand Director General of Police (DGP)] told the media in Ranchi.
On the contrary of complaints that the candidates were forced to run in the scorching heat, the average temperature in Jharkhand was around 23-30°C.
Mr. Gupta defended the complaints saying that proper management is there at the centres and all possible facilities are being provided to the candidates.
Oral rehydration salt (ORS) drinks are also available at holding areas.
“There is very a good management at all the centres. There is a facility of water, toilets, ORS, doctor, ambulance, nurses and medicines. We are ensuring that running starts before 6 a.m. and ends before 10 a.m. These are our children and we don’t want them to face any problems. Complete transparency is being maintained and videography is being done for the entire test. However, it is really sad that such an incident has taken place,” Mr. Gupta said.
Earlier while sharing the details IG (Operations) Amol V. Homkar said that a total of 1,27,772 candidates appeared for the physical tests till August 30, out of which 78,023 have cleared the tests. The total successful male candidates are 56,441 and female candidates are 21,582. Their physical tests ended on September 3, 2024.
In a statement, police said physical tests under the Jharkhand excise constable competitive examinations were underway in seven centres in Ranchi, Giridih, Hazaribagh, Palamu, East Singhbhum and Sahebganj districts.
"Even doctors are advising exercise as per one's capacity. Death of any candidate is indeed a matter of sadness," Jharkhand Health Minister Banna Gupta said. He attributed the deaths to increased cardiac issues following the Covid pandemic and noted that medical professionals are advising exercise according to individual capacity.
Following the death of 12 candidates during excise constable?recruitment drive, Jharkhand govt is all set to relax the parameters for the physical ability test, reports Sanjay Sahay. As against the current qualifying benchmark of 10km run in 60 minutes, the police department is going to introduce a system of completing 1.6km run in 5-6 minutes, or reducing the distance to 5km, to be covered in 25 minutes.

"ORS packets and drinking water are being given to the participants. In order to spare the candidates from working during the warmest portion of the day, physical examinations are scheduled early. All of the centers have medical camps, sufficient medication, ambulances, stretchers, mattresses, and mobile restrooms," the speaker stated. There are drinking water stations every 500 meters in Ranchi's Smart City center, according to official sources. The endurance run course is equipped with CCTV surveillance and police officials stationed at different sites to ensure that candidates experiencing health issues receive prompt medical attention.

My personal request to government will be - next time you do any recruitment drive which involves any physical assessments of candidates and involves any level of physical exhaustion, then please first assess the level of inflammation via these 4 blood tests biomarkers:
