As we approach the time of year for performance feedback, do you have a strategy for receiving, understanding, and acting on this input? The Feedback Box is a simple yet effective tool for analysts looking to make sense of stakeholder feedback and translate it into actionable insights. By categorising feedback into categories such as advice, compliments, criticism, and suggestions, analysts can focus their efforts on what matters most. This approach helps them avoid emotional pitfalls and fosters a culture of constructive improvement within their teams.
Whether you are a novice analyst unsure of how to handle complex feedback or a seasoned professional aiming to streamline the feedback process, the Feedback Box serves as a valuable starting point. With practice and proper application, it can transform how analysts and their teams manage feedback, leading to better decision-making and improved outcomes. I know you will be enjoying this edition of the newsletter. Please remember to provide me with feedback also highlight areas of improvement. Let us meet later this week.
How Analysts Can Use the Feedback Box to Build Insights from Stakeholder Feedback

A Comprehensive Analyst Guide to Accrual vs. Cash Accounting
This article helps you understand what to do when asked about finance-related queries irrespective that you don’t know much about finance. If you are an analyst still navigating the intricate landscape of finance, the choice between Accrual Accounting and Cash Accounting is pivotal. These methods offer distinct perspectives on a company’s financial standing, catering to the preferences and needs of both novice and seasoned analysts. Accrual accounting, with its holistic approach, paints a detailed financial portrait by capturing all transactions, providing a real-time reflection of a company’s performance. Seasoned analysts appreciate its power in facilitating accurate trend analysis, long-term profitability assessment, and overall financial health evaluation.
On the other hand, Cash Accounting, with its simplicity, aligns with the everyday understanding of financial transactions, making it more intuitive for novice analysts. However, seasoned professionals recognise its limitations, particularly in scenarios with extended payment cycles or significant non-cash transactions. In the end, the right path depends on factors such as the nature of the business and regulatory requirements. Whether one leans towards the simplicity of cash accounting or the precision of accrual accounting, a nuanced understanding of these methods is essential for making informed financial decisions in the ever-evolving world of finance.
Why South African CFOs are Pivotal for Successful ESG Strategy
The journey of ESG in South Africa is not merely a tale of adopting global trends but a profound evolution of business ethos within the country’s unique context. As senior analysts in the South African market, we hold that CFOs wield the strategic acumen and financial stewardship to champion ESG initiatives, making them integral to corporate identity. They are not just the custodians of financial integrity but also the architects of sustainable growth. CFOs must leverage their comprehensive view of the company’s strategic landscape to embed ESG principles within the very DNA of corporate decision-making, ensuring that the pursuit of sustainability is both a strategic imperative and a benchmark for innovation.
Through meticulous goal setting, judicious capital allocation, and steadfast board engagement, CFOs can translate ESG from a concept to a quantifiable component of business performance. Their role extends beyond compliance to envisioning a future where financial health and ESG excellence are synonymous. The South African corporate narrative thus moves forward, not just by complying with the King Code but by setting a standard where ESG is the keystone of corporate success. The future beckons a new era where ESG, steered by astute financial governance, shapes enterprises that thrive by contributing positively to the environment and society while achieving their economic objectives.
