We were at the airport waiting to check in our luggage bags. It was our turn so we approached the counter and were being informed that we were slightly overweight and will have to pay extra for the additional kilos.
My Nephew was observing our conversation I was having with the airline representative. I finished checking in our luggage bags after paying the airline the additional sum and then started heading towards the designated gate number. I was amazed at my Nephew’s question and was unable to answer him so thought of asking you’ll.
Nephew: Chachu, why did he ask us to pay extra?
Me: Because our luggage was above the prescribed limits.
Nephew: Can I ask you something stupid?
Me: Go on
Nephew: Why don’t the airline start charging extra to people who are overweight?
Me: Why do you say that?
Nephew: I see a lot of influencers posting health-related videos to motivate people to stay fit. But still, they are unable to motivate not far too many of them. And also, why is only fitness influencers/ athletes/celebrities driving this great initiative; why can’t airlines too play their part and drive the mission of “Healthy Nation”?
Me: Okay. What is your solution, my dear?
Nephew: Airlines should simply charge extra to people who are not treating their bodies well. We will be surprised to see the change.
Me: How are you so confident?
Nephew: You may have not seen the other person standing next to us, but I did. He was overweight just like us and was told to pay extra charges. But, he did not pay anything, and instead he just went and dumped a few things from his bag to avoid those unnecessary charges. Honestly, tell me, a similar thought may have crossed your mind too, hasn’t it?
Me: Yes!!!
Nephew: I know. Most of the Indians do not like to pay extra charges; more so they simply hate it. So if they are compelled to pay extra for their own weight don't you think they will start to taking fitness a tad more seriously?
To all who are reading this article - Please do comment below to tell me what should I say to my 11-year-old nephew.
P.S: My nephew has no intention to hurt anyone. He was not body shaming, but just simple concerned for people who are just NOT taking their health seriously anymore. He is 11 and practices yoga every day, which is why health is so important to him.
