In an era, in which we are surrounded by a LOT of negativity from the news, social media, gossip, and more, it has become increasingly harder to block noise out and all the haters! I’ve included below 11 different ways that I personally build up my own mental toughness and fortitude as the hardest territory to manage is RIGHT between your ears! You do these and you will be unstoppable in your pursuit to achieve your goals!
1. Set Massive Goals
This is easier said than done – set goals that are so BIG that you are scared to share with others! By having big scary goals, this will give you PURPOSE and will help you drive towards achieving them when you run into obstacles. ALSO, post them EVERYWHERE! From your bathroom mirror, to your phone background, to your car, office, etc! Having it fresh in your face will inspire you!
2. Know Your WHY
Go deep – what is your WHY? What will PUSH you regardless of the adversity thrown your way? If you don’t know your WHY, then you simply won’t push through. Once you know your WHY, the HOW will become evident! This is the internal fire that will burn to help you achieve your goals!
3. Neuro-Linguistic Programming and Affirmations
If you are not familiar with this, this is a powerful technology that can change how you think. The highest performers in the world understand that their physiology and self-talk can drastically change how they FEEL, which ultimately changes how they perform!
4. Feed Your Mind Daily
Your true education began after you graduated! By feeding your mind constantly with different perspectives, ways of thinking, and new knowledge, it changes how you perceive things! Just like your body, you must feed it consistently with quality content. Some of my favorite authors and speakers that I read/listen to include Tony Robbins, Zig Ziglar, Eric Thomas, Brian Tracy, and Brendon Burchard!
5. Letter to Your Future Self
This is a simple one – write a letter to yourself that has reminders of your WHY, your goals, and reminders of all the times you’ve been SUCCESSFUL! When you get in a dark spot, pull the letter out to read to REMIND yourself of what you are working towards and to help you build confidence as a reminder of what you have achieved!
6. Preparation
This is a SUPER easy way to build mental toughness and that is simply over-preparing for everything you do! By over-preparing for everything, you will build mental fortitude that you can handle anything thrown your way. Anticipation is the ultimate power!
7. Perfect Practice Makes Perfect
Whatever field you are in, meticulous perfect practice will build up references in your mind of your ability to execute on it. For example: if you are a sales professional and you meticulously practice your phone scripts to the point that it no longer sounds like a script, you will build confidence over time on the phones! The muscle memory is a easy way to stand out from the crowd!
8. Hustle and Execute
Fear and anxiety feed only one thing – TIME! By taking action and executing, regardless of the result, you will build mental toughness. With consistent execution, you will figure out that you will either WIN or you will LEARN!
9. Celebrate Wins Daily
Regardless of how your day went, ask yourself, “What did I achieve today that I am proud of?” By celebrating daily wins, this changes your focus to success vs. failure….and progress is the ultimate motivation! This will give you perspective and milestones to work towards on the journey to greatness!
10. Reprogram Your Brain
I know – this sounds strange but it is a powerful way to change how you think. Think about a recent time something negative or bad happened to you – what types of questions did you ask yourself? Most people will ask themselves ,”What’s wrong with me? Why did this happen to me? What am I going to do? What is wrong with them? Etc.!” Notice that these are all negatively focused questions! If you change the questions to a different focus, you’ll get a different response from your brain! Example:
“What’s great about this situation?”
“What can I learn from this?”
“How can I apply what I learned from this for the future to help me?”
Note the difference in your mental response – it’s not easy but with time, it can be done!
11. Utilize Your Mentors
Despite all of the above, sometimes it is nice just to talk it out with someone! Keep in mind that it is not just to talk it out with anyone – you want to seek out your mentor as they can help give you a value-added perspective. Also, you only want to take advice from people doing better than you and are in the position you want to be in!
