13 Transformative Questions to Unlock Your Career Path and Purpose

There comes a moment in everyone's life when the road ahead seems uncertain. Perhaps a challenging event, like a tough performance review, a company layoff, or a personal loss, has shaken your career compass and caused you to start doubting your current circumstances.

Maybe you've reached a pinnacle of success, only to find the landscape uninspiring and empty. It's during these times of soul-searching that doubts and fears can cloud our vision, hindering our ability to see any path forward.

The unknown keeps you stuck, but there's a secret. You already have the answers you seek, waiting to be unraveled through open-minded reflection. To help you navigate this journey, and point you in the right direction, I present to you 13 questions.

Get comfy, you're going to want to take your time. Find a place where you can focus without distractions. It's time you got curious about yourself:

1) Reflect on the last five books you've read or podcasts you've listened to. What captivated you about these topics?

2) Imagine overhearing a conversation; what topics would irresistibly draw your attention or prompt you to join in?

3) If you could go back to school and study three different subjects/majors, what would they be?

4) Picture a world where work is optional. List 10 activities you'd spend your time on. Pick three that would benefit the world in some way.

5) Wake up tomorrow as your own boss. What changes would you implement in your job? What would you start or stop doing?

6) List the tasks you do to procrastinate from work you are avoiding. Normally these tasks tend to create a sense of flow and you may lose track of time. What do they reveal about your preferences?

7) Delve into your previous work experiences. What aspects did you genuinely love? Think about your roles, colleagues, and the nature of the organizations.

8) Reflect on your past jobs. What didn't resonate with you, and why?

9) Recall the projects from your career that still spark a sense of pride. What made them special?

10) What are the talents or skills for which people seek you out? These are clues to your unique strengths.

11) Imagine creating five clones of yourself, each with a different job. What professions would they pursue? Which job would you assign to the real you?

12) Imagine you’re about to retire and you have to give a speech about your proudest accomplishments and projects. What do you share?

13) What is the intersection between your skills and knowledge, what you’re excited about, and what you want to learn/experience next?

If you've journeyed through these questions with honesty, an open mind, and fearlessness, you probably have a couple of potential threads that interest you, some might even call to you. Embrace these insights, and commit to exploring where each of these ideas takes you. True clarity starts with information but is created and brought to life through action. Let the adventure begin!
