11 Signs Your Body is Healing: That Have Nothing to Do With Weight ??
Tasha Stevens
Clinical Nutritionist, B.S + Hormone Expert, CPT, STOTT Pilates Instructor
I used to believe that the number on the scale or on my jeans defined if I was “healthy” or not. Maybe it was the diet culture marketing I was exposed to as a child, maybe it was the firm belief that if I did not “look like everyone else” then there must be something wrong with me.
But this constant pursuit of a “number” haunted my health journey and it started to steal my confidence, self-worth, and happiness.
While maintaining a healthy BMR can indicate optimal health – it does not define your health journey. Why?
Because optimal health, hormone balance, and regulated system function matter more.
Diet culture has perpetuated this fixation as women we always focus on what is wrong or broken with our bodies. So we end up fixating so much on the negative of how our body is “failing us” that we forget to account for all the healing that occurs right under our nose.
When your systems are supported and your body can do the job that it is designed to do, which is to keep you feeling vibrant and thriving, then everything else falls into place. This means that tracking shifts in your symptoms, outside of weight, ensures you are on the right path with your hormone balance journey.
As an Integrative Clinical Nutritionist, B.S. and CPT, I have coached thousands of women through their health journeys. The most important part of the process is breaking up with the scale and holding onto a “number” to determine their success. But really tuning into checking in on their symptoms and celebrating the healing that happens each and every day.
In fact, when you focus on this, you will find that you feel more confident and have a great appreciation for your body. Which in turn only perpetuates more satisfaction in the process, And when you feel happier in your health journey, you are more likely to remain consistent with it.
So here are 11 signs that your body is healing that you can start celebrating each and every day ??:
?? You Fall Asleep Within 15 Minutes of Going to Bed
Falling asleep within 15 minutes shows regulated cortisol and melatonin levels. When cortisol is high, this disrupts melatonin production. When your body is happy and not stressed, you should be able to fall asleep within 15 minutes and stay asleep for the night. (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4688585/)
?? You Have Daily Bowel Movements
Daily bowel movements are a topic indicator of a healthy digestive tract. Regular bowel movements promote the natural detoxification of your body and excess hormones. Regular bowel movements can even reduce stress and anxiety. (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5038884/)
? You Don’t Wake Up in the Middle of the Night to Pee
Waking up in the middle of the night can indicate that your cortisol (stress hormone) is spiking too early in the morning. Disrupting your sleep cycle and causing you to wake up (and then realize you need to use the restroom). Cortisol should be the lowest when you go to sleep and gradually rise during sleep to peak at your normal wake-up time (between 5 AM-7 AM). (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7068538/)
?? You have Clear and Glowing Skin
Regulated hormone production helps to control and coordinate metabolic and reproductive functions to support ongoing collagen and elastin growth, balanced skin oil production, and normal hair follicle stimulation. In fact, healthy and moderate levels of estrogen can help to prevent the aging effects of the skin (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/11705091/). Which means your skin and hair will look as fabulous as you feel.
?? You Have Regular Hunger Cues
Regular hunger cues are a sign of optimal metabolic function and our body’s way of telling you what it needs to function at its best. Hunger cues are often disrupted by chronic stress, under-eating, and insulin dysfunction. Feeling hungry every 3-4 hours can show healthy metabolic function and regulated hunger hormone levels. (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK555906/)
?? You are Getting Stronger in Your Workouts
Getting stronger in your workouts shows that your body is building lean mass. Increased lean mass increases metabolic function, it protects against osteoporosis, and it can help to regulate estrogen storage in the body (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4586522/). Lean mass is very expensive for your body to maintain, so the fact that your body is building it shows it feels safe to do so!
?? You Don’t Have Cravings or Binge Eat Snacks
Cravings happen as a result of disrupted blood sugar, under-eating, and imbalances with insulin and leptin (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7019570/). Oftentimes, your body has intense cravings because you are not eating enough of the right type of energy to help support optimal function.
?? You Feel Warm and Have Improve Thermoregulation

Feeling warm or having proper thermoregulation is a sign of optimal thyroid function. Your thyroid controls your heartbeat, metabolism, and controls body temperature (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/8808101/). This is a great sign that your thyroid hormone is happy and supported.
?? You Don’t Bloat After Meals
Bloating after meals can be a sign of a digestive issue, a disrupted gut biome, a sluggish liver, or inflammation in the body (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5350578/#:~:text=There%20are%20many%20causes%20of,irritable%20bowel%20syndrome%20(IBS)). Feeling satisfied and bloat-free can indicate a happy digestive tract and healthy bowel motility.
?? You Have Regular Cervical Fluid and can Confirm Ovulation
Healthy cervical fluid is a sign of optimal ovulation in the body! Ovulation is critical to maintaining hormone balance and cervical fluid promotes healthy bacteria, protects from pathogens, and indicates that your body feels safe to even ovulate (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4149850/#:~:text=The%20quality%20of%20the%20cervical,watery%20to%20allow%20sperm%20penetration.). Cervical fluid should be sticky and egg white in consistency around ovulation.
?? You Have Easy Pain-Free Periods Every 28-30 Days that are Cherry Red
Your healthy and regular period is the 5th vital sign of health for women. Having a period means that your body ovulates and has regulated levels of progesterone and estrogen to support potential conception (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC10810236/#:~:text=Menstruation%20is%20considered%20the%20fifth,to%20the%20health%20of%20menstruators.). A healthy flow should occur about every 28-30 days and be cherry red in coloring lasting 4-6 days.
Key Takeaways
??? The scale does not define your health. It is only one teeny tiny part of a much larger assessment. When your hormones and systems are properly supported, you will no longer struggle with symptoms like PMS, bloating, or belly aches.
??? Your health is a never-ending journey, and waiting to celebrate the number on a scale is a surefire way to get frustrated and lose hope in this journey.
??? Our culture has perpetuated the idea that we are “not enough” or that we constantly need to “improve”. But when you live in this state of constantly critiquing your body for not getting results – you inadvertently add more stress.
And how can you expect to grow and heal when you are constantly focusing on the negative or deficits? It won’t.
Instead, celebrate daily how your body has shown up for you. Celebrate all the wins that happen outside the scale. Like having the energy to breeze through your day.
Celebrate the amazing gifts your body gives you. Like feeling clarity and having stable moods.
Not only will you find more satisfaction in your journey, but you will no longer be stuck in the toxic and obsessive pressure to “get results”.
And that’s true health freedom.
