11 Mistakes to Stop Making in Mobile App Design
Adults spend at least 4 hours in front of their mobile screens every single day. If a business needs to maintain strong customer engagement, it must meet customers in their natural habitat- the smartphone.
Mobile apps have become a business essential, and large-scale businesses have been designing intelligent applications to cater to customer demands. However, not every app launch is successful; instead, some are utter failures and burden the ever-increasing cost of businesses.
Here are the top 11 mistakes you must avoid in your mobile app design.
HOW FAST & EASILY CAN YOUR AUDIENCE GET WHAT THEY WANT?
COMPLEX INFORMATION STRUCTURE
Information structure refers to how a user can access the available information. Usually, some apps distribute the information in multiple categories and subcategories that provide more information than a customer can handle.
The distribution means the customer has to scroll through innumerable data to reach their requirement, and most of them get lost in their search.
“IT IS NATURAL TO LOSE SIGHT OF CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE WHILE FOCUSING ON THE DEVELOPMENT PROCESS.”
ANIMATION OVERLOAD
Most app designers often focus on developing a unique interface filled with animations and graphics. Although the stylish interface can enrich the customer experience, it often loses focus on the app’s primary requirement.
INCONSISTENT DESIGN
A core factor in maintaining excellent customer experience is developing consistency in your design. The fonts, colour pallets, categories, and subcategories must be consistent throughout the application to streamline user experiences.
STRENUOUS TEXT SIZE & PLACEMENT
“IF I CAN PERFORM MOST FEATURES WITH ONE HAND, IT MAKES IT FAR EASIER TO USE THAN USING TWO HANDS.”
Text placement and sizing can often go wrong during the process; designers must maintain an objective view to ensure effective design.
CLUTTER = LITTER
Although creating numerous categories can lead to poor customer experience, cluttering your dashboard with every piece of information, regardless of its importance, can significantly impact user experience.
You must develop a good combination of categories and subcategories that help users get the needed information.

LACK OF ONE-HANDED USE
Most developers don’t even consider this which blows my mind. I notice it all the time as soon as I pop open an app, if I can perform most features with one hand, it makes it far easier to use than using two hands. Developers and Designers can always do things like making the secondary menu transparent, allowing users to maintain all of that screen space. The ability to shrink on-screen items to a popup window and layer it on top of other windows is also useful. Personally, I would love to see more and more developers using this as a framework for their projects, something similar to the way Apple make use of this on the iPhone 6 Plus onwards.
FEATURES OVERLOAD
An app’s UI design is closely related to the different features it offers; if your app has multiple features, it will impact its loading speed and efficiency.
However, you can’t miss out on the necessary elements; therefore, you must observe from a customer’s viewpoint before finalising the features for your app.
NAIVE COLOUR SELECTION
Every niche has a unique colour used by most sector applications- it is usually based on the customer’s preference.
Your app needs to keep a colour palette per the niche’s standard norms, but it should also be aligned with your brand’s philosophy.
UN-OPTIMISED APP
Some large-scale businesses have to upgrade their app after every short interval; hence, they often opt for common components regardless of the user’s operating system.
It leads to unoptimised apps, where some features malfunction while others can’t be used at all.
INAPT CUSTOMER INSIGHT
App design is a challenging task, and it can take longer than first expected. Hence, designers often lose sight of their customer’s requirements through the end of the process and instead focus on completing the process in the earliest timeframe instead of when it’s ready.
LACK OF FEEDBACK IMPLEMENTATION
Creating the best app on your first attempt is challenging, and feedback is essential to correct your errors and ensure a great customer experience. Some apps aren’t designed to include customer feedback, leading to poor UI design.
If you are working on app design, you must ensure to avoid these mistakes to create a great application. I hope this blog helped you learn a little bit more about the mistakes you should avoid when creating a mobile app; we would love to hear your suggestions in the comments.
