So you want get on a TEDx stage...
That's cool.
But since you're not alone, your best chances are either:
1. Having the production team reach out to you.
2. Absolutely nail the application process.
This post will share ideas about both. Let's start with getting them to want you!
1. Be known for what you do.
Being well respected in your community has it's benefits. One of them is your notoriety could land you on stage.
2. Match the theme of the event.
Some events have a specific theme. If your talk dovetails well, it will help you get chosen.
3. Get a solid intro to production team.
Sure you'll have to have your message down, but finding people who can introduce you to the team with a message you want to share can go a long way.
4. Connect with the curator.
Even better than the production team is finding the curator. Visit?ted.com. Find the link for tedx events. Search for events by time or location. Find one you like and look at the page to find curator. Check them out on LinkedIn and ask to connect.
5. Have a big following.
Events need people who can draw a crowd. Having a big following may help you both.

As far as nailing the application goes:
1. Answer the question: if you had 10 minutes to share ONE idea to change the world, what would it be?
Use as few words as possible to answer that. More advice to follow.
2. Write a clear, concise and compelling summary of your talk.
Make it 100 words or less.
3. Create a video that is similar to your summary. Keep it under 90 seconds.
Focus on the big idea, why it matters, key takeaways for audience why you're qualified to deliver the message, who you are. Use that order.?
Remember your idea is bigger than you. Plus, people always listen for someone's name so keeping it last means you'll keep their attention longer.
4. Reach out to anyone you know who is friends with the selector of speakers and ask for a good word. This can include co-workers, family, friends or even past speakers.
5. Follow and engage with the event's social media. Bonus points for sharing the event.?
6. Find someone to coach you through the process. I'd be honored to add you to the list of folks I've helped land on stages. Reach out.
Got other ideas? Share them.
Got questions? Ask them.
Oh and be sure to check out the 15th annual TEDx event happening in Detroit on September 28.
