1+1 = 1 ; 0,5+0,5 = 4/5? Mr. Einstein, are you joking?? You cannot be serious !!!
It might seem like a Halloween joke, but it’s not like this !!!
We are sure it’s not like this when we count the money in our pockets and are happy about that.
But, unfortunately, it’s not even like this when we look at the registered expenses made through our credit cards.
But, if we consider relativistic phenomena suitable to be addressed, understood, and analysed using Lorentz’s transformations or, more in general, using Einstein’s Special Relativity Theory while making calculations of distances, speeds, times and matter quantities in the systems in relativistic motion, we’ll be sharply surprised and astonished realising that 1+1 is not 2 !!!
???? ????
????????????????????? ??????????????????????????
a)????? If we consider a light beam which moves at the speed C= 300.000 km/s in a reference system and the reference system travels at the same speed in comparison to another fixed reference system, the total speed observed from a person in the latter will not be 2xC, but only C=300.000 Km/s.
b)????? If we consider a rocket which moves in regards to a reference system at a speed of 0,5*C = 150.000 KM/s, and that reference system is moving at the same speed in comparison to a second reference system, which is fixed, the total speed observed shall not be (0,5+0,5)*C = 300.000km/s, but only (4/5)*C!
????? As a matter of fact :
Vx = x/t =( u+Vx’) / (1+(u*Vx’/(c^2)).
c) If we make space travel for one year at a speed of the same order as the light speed, the time we spend during the travel will be one year for us but significantly longer for an observer on Earth (Twin Paradox):

Tearth = Tspace/((1-((u/c)^2))^0,5)
d)???? Two events that occur in two different points (x1 and x2) of a system at the same time t1=t2 in that system are not simultaneous to an observer in another reference system. As a matter of fact, to that external observer, it is :??
T2 # T1 = (V*(x1-x2)/(c^2)) / ((V^2)/(c^2))^(0,5).
According to Einstein, inertial observers in relative motion disagree on the timing of the events at different places.
Don’t you agree? ?Are you confused? ?
I understand you!
It isn’t easy to accept it, but if you have a look at the minutes of Richard Feynman’s Caltech lessons, tracing back to 60 years ago, you’ll get easily convinced, and you’ll start putting at stake a lot of the things you were sure about, till today !!!
Even if we are not physicians, can we live without knowing that it is not necessarily 1+1=2?
Can we ignore that when we run in a specific direction, our body mass increases [m = mo*v/((1-(v^2)/(c^2))^0,5)], the space in that direction shortens, and time slows down?
Can we continue believing in the simultaneity of the events?
Sure, we can. It’s possible to do without Einstein's (and others') proven scientific theories!
As it was possible some time ago to survive believing that stars and planets were moved in the Universe by seven angels.
But certainly, it would be much less appealing !!!
And dangerous. Because unproven theories to be accepted by faith open the doors to disasters.
Thanks a lot, Mr. Einstein. Have a nice Halloween !!!

1 年Dear Raffaele, thanks for the nice post! As physics lover (gratuated in Nuclear Power in the high school and partecipant to the Physics Olimpian when I was a student), I already know these topics. But I really like to share to other people.
