At times I wonder who rigged the workplace promotion system in favor of experience rather than results. People feel entitled to higher salaries simply because they have 20 years’ experience in a company. We need to understand whether their years of experience translate to more value for the company.
That you have been working in a place for years doesn’t necessarily mean that you have become more valuable to the company. You don’t become valuable by chance but on purpose. You have to be highly intentional if you want to be progressively valuable. In most cases, people with 20 years of work experience only have one year of experience repeated 20 times. They kept doing the same thing.
You need to understand that value should guarantee a higher income not years at work. No one ever gets more valuable doing the same thing year in and year out. Years of service aren’t value. If you want to earn more, you should deliver more value. Your value is your asset and your responsibility. You don’t become valuable over time, you become valuable when you deliver value to your employer.
At Value Giver Coach, we have a concept where we help employees become 10 times more valuable than they currently are. Every employer wants their people to continually increase in value. Here are two major ways to be valuable to your employer:
1. Increase revenue
2. Reduce cost
There are many ways to make that happen. These are the two outcomes of value creation. Either the value you are creating is increasing the revenue of your employer or reducing the cost. If it's not benefiting your employer financially, it is not value. Value is the thunder to money’s lighting. When you make your employer valuable to the marketplace, your employer makes money.
Except you work in a not-for-profit organization where impact is seen as value, in for-profit organization income is the end product of every value. If the value doesn’t transform into income, everybody will lose their jobs and there won’t be any business. Even though people are the end of a business, money is still a measure of value and progress while the impact on people remains the measure of its success.
Truly Human Companies focus on building people who will then produce the economic fuel to run the company and serve more people. To reciprocate the opportunities and services companies render to their employees, they should focus on what will make them more valuable to their employers.
“You get paid for bringing value to the marketplace, and if you’re not very valuable you don’t make much money.” Jim Rohn
In most cases, value is tied to positions and roles. That only feeds and builds entitled employees who only do the barest minimum not responsible ones who create more value. Companies that want to have people who continually grow and improve their value should build a culture that rewards their employees for the value they create. When people are rewarded and recognized for the value they create, everyone will focus on ways to create value.
Having a degree or higher will not increase your value except you are able to translate that into more income for your employer. I learned this lesson as a young graduate of electrical engineering. Someone who has never been to a University was earning 14 times more than I was. It taught me that what matters in companies is the income I bring in not the qualification I garnered.

Most companies operate in a capitalist economy but have a socialist internal economy. In a capitalist economy, people are rewarded for the value they bring to the table, while in a socialist economy people are rewarded according to need not contributions, and in many cases according to their position. We need to ensure that companies ate capitalist both internally and externally.
People should not earn minimum wage simply because it’s entry-level but because it’s the reward of value they bring to their employer. People should not earn the same salary simply because they are at the same level or position. They should earn based on their contributions. When someone in the same position with another earns $500 an hour while the other earns $50 an hour based on their contributions, the latter will find a way to increase his value to earn the same amount as the former.
A culture that rewards and recognizes people based on their contributions to the company will encourage more people to multiply their contribution to 10x their value.
How To 10X Your Value
To 10x your value, you have to stop working harder on your job and start working harder on yourself.
1. 10X Your Thinking: Thinking 10x expands your imagination. It stretches your mind. Your mind only becomes useful when you stretch it. And when it is stretched by an idea, it will not return back to where it was before being stretched. To stretch the mind, we use the Bigger Future Self (Value Creation) Question to help employees imagine their value in the next 3, 7, 10, 15, and 21 years. That way their future keeps getting bigger and better. The bigger you imagine your future to be, the more valuable you will have to be. The future you imagine drives your behavior in the present. It determines your future. People who are not imagining a bigger future are held to their past value. You will see opportunities to become valuable when you 10x your mindset.
2. ?10x Your Capability: 10xing your capability doesn’t mean you should master one skill. What it means is that you should develop a skill set that is unique only to you. You should master 3-5 different skills to have 10x capability. Whatever opportunities you see with your 10x mindset, you can capture with your 10x capability.
3. 100x Your Collaborations: When people with 10x mindsets and 10x capabilities collaborate, they create new capabilities for their employer. Unique capability Collaborations always result in 100x value.
