10th Year Service Anniversary - Tribute
10 years ago I resumed my service at Simonsig Wines, a very familiar territory to me, since I was born on this farm. Having left the wine industry 6 year prior to my return in search of other opportunities and personal growth. This journey took me around the world, working and developing communities through leadership, collaboration, sports & faith.
Visiting these countries were great however, seeing similar challenges to that of which South Africa has, made me realise that I cannot escape the reality of life. I remember my reasons for wanting to study viticulture and excess the industry at a more senior level, so that I can bring about change and be a role model for many other young people who were struggling with the belief that they were born to be general worker or had such a low self-esteem that they could not envision a position higher than that of a general worker.
You must be the change you wish to see in the world. - Mahatma Gandhi
I remember my return to Simonsig and the Wine Industry like yesterday. Sitting around the table with the MD & my former Senior Manager whom only have heard about me previously, but not met me. The MD being one of the owners knowing me very well "asked me if I wont now run off on another development trip/ job opportunity if it present itself ?" Having thought well about this before my return to the industry I replied "if there is no personal growth and growth within the company I will definitely move" , however what was more important too me having worked in development and understanding the value of people management was what the values/ culture of the company was. This was more important too me than excepting the job just because of money it was about aligning my personal values with that of the company, why? Because if it wasn't aligned I would be wasting my time and the company would be wasting their money on me.
If you hire people just because?they can do a job, they'll work for your money. But if you hire people who believe what you believe, they'll work for you with blood, sweat, and tears. - Simon Sinek
Today I am living my best live being able to combine my passion for people & community development in the wine industry, being supported by my employers (Simonsig) and giving hope to the next generation of workers in the wine industry. I have a wine range which assist with our fundraising efforts, because we don't believe in hand-outs, but hand-ups.

If you have not supported my efforts to assist transformation through education in the wine industry, you can do so by donating funds, in-kind donation, your skills. Visit our website https://sosfoundation.org.za/ we are looking for a main donor to support the work we do with farm young people. To sponsor a young person for a year is R35 000 which includes (mentoring, tutoring, life-skills & leadership conferences 4 times a year).
