Editor's Note by Lisema Matsietsi
Our edition of the newsletter delves into the growing complexity of analytical tasks in dynamic business environments and presents the Cynefin framework as a navigational tool for various problem types. Created by Dave Snowden in 1999, this framework classifies challenges into five domains: Clear (Simple), Complicated, Complex, Chaotic, and Aporetic (Confusion). Each domain necessitates a distinct problem-solving approach, providing analysts with a customised methodology according to the problem's nature.
The inforgraphic discusses how analysts can apply the Cynefin framework to address known-knowns, known-unknowns, and unknown-unknowns, highlighting the importance of adaptability and collaboration as problems change. Although the framework promotes flexibility and improved communication, it also presents challenges such as subjectivity and a steep learning curve for new analysts. In conclusion, the Cynefin framework aids in decision-making by categorising problems and encouraging adaptability in the face of complex issues. I believe you will find this newsletter insightful, and we look forward to reconnecting this coming Thursday with another edition.

Moving Beyond Data Collection to Data Orchestration
IoT connectivity and analytics are moving beyond data collection to data orchestration. Learn how real-time insights, edge analytics, and integrated data streams help optimize performance, reduce downtime, and drive smarter decisions, making data orchestration essential for industrial efficiency.
You could be forgiven for labeling IoT connectivity and analytics as tools primarily designed for data collection. These technologies do gather vast amounts of information from machines, sensors, and systems, but viewing them solely through the lens of collection limits their true potential. When companies fall into the trap of amassing data without a clear strategy for transforming it into actionable insights, it creates a pretty significant missed opportunity... Read More
How Analysts Can Lead High-Performing Teams Using the FSNPA Model and Beyond
Many of us have adopted agile methodologies, not only for project teams but also for running teams and initiatives. While not all aspects may align with various agile methods, one thing is certain: analysts often find themselves working with numerous teams in a year. This way of working may bring out the best in an analyst in one initiative, while they may struggle to integrate with others in a different initiative. As a result, analysts may not consistently perform well in different teams due to the agile team arrangement, leading to underperformance. Is there a framework that can help us nurture teams for better performance? This article delves into the Forming-Storming-Norming-Performing-Adjourning (FSNPA) model and its applicability in analyst teams... Read More
