  • Physicians in Leadership Roles: A recently published survey from Jackson Physician Search and the Medical Group Management Association highlights how physician leadership development is underemphasized in medical training and beyond. The value of having physicians in leadership roles is widely recognized, but recruiting for these roles is limited and only 21% of healthcare organizations offer some leadership training for physicians.
  • Virtual Interviews for Training Programs: The COVID-19 pandemic forced most companies and organizations to at least temporarily adopt a virtual interview process, and residency programs were no different. Today, many of these programs still interview residency applicants virtually, although some prefer in-person evaluations. Do the lowered costs and other benefits of virtual residency interviews outweigh the negatives?
  • Fee Schedule Pushback: A majority of House members supported an October 11th letter urging House leaders to reverse the most recent 2.8% Medicare Physician Fee Schedule cut and pass legislation to prevent similar cuts in the future. The latest fee schedule cuts will mark the fifth consecutive year that CMS has proposed such cuts. With Medicare payments falling and practice costs rising, physicians are having a difficult time keeping their practices sustainable.

Physicians: What you don't know about money and practice success will shock you

Curtis G. Graham, MD

A business background is surprisingly useful for physicians, especially if you are running a practice. Taking Better Breaks

Evan Winter

Taking time off from work has many positive effects on productivity and substantially aids in preventing burnout. Physicians and other high-functioning professionals often have difficulty utilizing their PTO, even when plenty is available to them. For their own wellbeing, physicians must preemptively ensure they not only have available time off but also know how and when to use it.

CONTRACTS

Pro Tip: If you find a non-compete clause in your contract, consider how it relates to your specialty. No physician really wants to be under a non-compete, but these clauses are even more unnecessary for emergency physicians, anesthesiologists, and other specialties who are not as tied to recurring patients. In these situations, employers should not have to worry about you poaching patients when you leave, so a non-compete is particularly excessive. This logic can be used when attempting to negotiate a non-compete out of your contract.
