101 on Pinterest Indexing

If you are new to Pinterest or still feel like Pinterest makes your head hurt (is it like Instagram? Is it like Google? What even is it?!?!), let me explain. One of my pet peeves is marketing 'gurus' who use terms and language that are very industry-specific and don't bother to actually define the terminology or give context.?


So let me give you the 101 on Pinterest indexing and why it's UBER important for your Pinterest marketing efforts.

  • As a platform, Pinterest functions differently than other social media platforms. From almost the beginning, Pinterest has developed its own technology to deliver and share content with Pinterest users. It is categorized as a search engine (which means it is more like Google)
  • As a search engine, Pinterest needs sophisticated technology to determine what to show its users. They use artificial intelligence (AI) to understand what each Pin is about using a?combination of many elements or factors
  • As time has gone on, Pinterest engineers have worked hard to develop technology that will quickly attempt to understand what your content is about so it knows whom to show it to and WHEN. We call this discoverability
  • Because the technology is rooted in AI, it is robots trying to rapidly make a decision about what your content or Pins are about - and as such, it can make mistakes
  • Some of the key elements that it looks at are the image used/video used, text or copy on the Pin, what words are used on the Pin, what words are used in the Pin title and Pin description, what it links to (if relevant) and what board it was Pinned to. These are all 'clues' to the technology to quickly make a decision.

What a lot of creators and business owners have learned using this little trick is that sometimes Pinterest makes mistakes - and if it doesn't know what your content is about OR makes a bad call, it means your Pins will be just floating out there getting no love - and therefore, not be discovered by Pinterest users.
