101 people hospitalised till now due to GBS in Pune. Is untreated water the reason?
A shocking connection has emerged between untreated water supply and suspected Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) cases in Pune. The number of cases has risen to 101, with 28 new infections confirmed. Sixteen patients diagnosed with this rare but treatable condition are currently on ventilator support. Authorities have advised residents to boil water and thoroughly cook their food before consumption.
Civic officials revealed that these area’s public health facilities and water infrastructure remain under the Zila Parishad’s control, despite repeated requests for their transfer to PMC.
Water is supplied via old networks from wells, with only basic chlorination performed. To address contamination concerns, the PMC is testing water samples from wells and affected households and inspecting drainage systems near these sources. In the interim, the chlorination dosage is being increased.
PMC plans to supply treated water to these areas through a new treatment plant at Khadakwasla, but construction will take time. Some areas will gain access to treated water through existing systems as infrastructure is gradually upgraded.
It is a disease that affects the neurological immune system, making it difficult to lift our hands, weakening our hands and legs, causing tingling in our hands and legs, and eventually affecting our lungs. In general, the incidence of this sickness is minimal, but in Pune, it rapidly develops within two weeks, and individuals are on ventilation.
