This week we’re talking about:

  • Stupid interview questions
  • A jobseeking horror story about free consulting disguised as a job offer
  • Why your resume should be a targeted marketing document, not a detailed job history
  • The best (worst?) job posting of the week
  • And a scam involving fake checks and a “personal software license” scheme

And for Premium subscribers I’m:

  • Debunking a post about counteroffers
  • Giving you tips on how to improve your phone interviews
  • Telling you how to frame your experience when things didn’t go well (basically how to showcase your value when the company you worked for wasn’t successful)
  • Answering a Premium subscriber's question about handling job loss due to burnout. I’ll explain how to discuss your departure, avoid red flags, and ask key questions to gauge whether a company supports its employees and manages workloads effectively.

SHAMELESS PLUG

If your job search needs a little more help, Karpiak Consulting offers resume and LinkedIn services, as well as job search strategy coaching.

Who knows…maybe it’ll help you get the job you want like this client ??

https://www.karpiakconsulting.com/career-services

So how did I help this resume review client land the specific job they wanted in approximately 1 month?

I explained that no matter what kind of job you are applying for, it all comes down to marketing.

Resumes aren't just a record of everything you've done...they are marketing documents crafted to position you as the perfect solution to a company's problem.

Job postings are essentially a company's pain points… they're a call for help. Your resume should act like a brochure, showcasing how your skills and experience directly address those needs. You want to highlight the relevant similarities and strategically downplay any differences.

In this case, the client's original resume was far too broad and expansive. It covered every aspect of his career in detail, which might seem impressive but actually works against you. Why? Because recruiters don't have the time (or knowledge base) to sift through a bunch of unrelated information to find what they need. If they can't see how you fit the role within the first few seconds, they're moving on to the next candidate. A general resume makes their job harder, and they're not going to do extra work to connect the dots.

So, I explained how he could tailored his resume specifically for the role he was targeting. He focused on the key skills and experiences that aligned with what the company was looking for. He cut out anything that wasn't relevant to that position. This way, his resume immediately showcased him as the ideal candidate to solve the company's pain points. Instead of a long list of every job he's ever had, it became a focused, compelling narrative about how his experience perfectly matched the company's needs.

It's important to remember: the job market is competitive, and you have to make it as easy as possible for recruiters to see you as the answer to their problem. By turning your resume into a targeted marketing document, you help the company see your value right away…no guesswork required.

So, if you're applying for jobs with a broad, catch-all resume and not getting results, it's time to shift your approach. Think of your resume as a marketing tool. Make sure it highlights how you can solve a specific problem for the company. Because you're not just selling your experience... you're selling your ability to make their life easier.

If you’re feeling like your resume isn’t telling your story the way it should and don’t know how to frame your experience, our services can help.

BEST (WORST?) JOB POST OF THE WEEK

Here’s the job post that got the most people talking on my Instagram this week!

"In what world is $5K a month “competitive” for a CMO??

PREMIUM SUBSCRIBER QUESTION

Burnout/frustration led to my employer firing me for being an "inconsistent performer" even though they were actively hiring for the role that I was in. Since they are contractually / legally limited to responding to any employment verification/reference checks with only my start and end dates and last job title, I can frame the story of my departure however I want, but I don't want to explicitly lie.

That being said, it's probably safer to assume that they will eventually learn that I was fired. Because of that, should I address it head-on? Or should I avoid using the term "fired?"

How much should I discuss the role that my mental health and or burnout played in my departure? What if I can share concrete actions that I have taken (improved self-awareness, better coping mechanisms, therapy, etc.) and things that are different about the prospective employer (size, industry, culture, etc.) that should prevent similar issues from resurfacing in the future?

Can I at least ask how they monitor and support employees' mental health?
