Jamie Adamson had just finished studying Politics and International Studies at the 英国华威大学 when he joined the Derwent London team for?the?summer as part of the 10,000 Black Interns scheme. We asked Jamie, his buddy and his reverse-mentee to discuss how this experience has impacted each of them.
Jamie to reverse-mentee, John Davies – Head of Sustainability:
Jamie: What did you expect from the reverse mentoring programme? Were you surprised by anything throughout the sessions?
John: Honestly, I didn’t know what to expect as I’ve only ever provided a mentoring role, so this has been a great experience. Whilst I wasn’t surprised by anything, I found it hugely positive, interesting, and really worthwhile.
Jamie: What can the industry do to be more diverse?
John: We should continue on the course of trying to open up our sector by providing intern and work experience programmes which draw from a wide variety of sources, not just the usual industry entry routes.?We need to show what is on offer, the range of roles available and the possible career paths.
"We should continue on the course of trying to open up our sector." - John
John to Jamie:
John: Did you have any preconceptions of the commercial property industry??If so, has your time with us changed them?
Jamie: I expected the commercial property industry, especially high-end commercial property, to have elements of snobbery and inaccessibility. However, my time here completely undid all preconceptions. I met all types of people who were very down to earth and friendly. There wasn’t a question that someone wouldn’t be happy to answer.
John: How have you found the role of mentoring? Would you recommend it to others?
Jamie: I have enjoyed the role and like the fact that despite my age, there are still things that someone with more wisdom than me can learn from. I would absolutely recommend it to someone else, to give them the chance to share their experiences and be heard by someone who has a genuine interest in them, which is truly invaluable.

Jamie to buddy, Piers Harrop MRICS – Assistant Development Manager:
Jamie: What is your best piece of advice for somebody looking to break into the property industry?
Piers: My advice would be to get as much work experience as possible in the various areas in the industry, and not to be afraid of trying things you hadn’t considered before. The sector is so diverse, with different roles offering incredibly different experiences and specialism to one another.

Jamie: What is the most enjoyable part of being paired up with an intern?
Piers: I have thoroughly enjoyed my experience as buddy to Jamie. He has shown great enthusiasm, professionalism, and an eagerness to learn throughout his time with us. Meeting Jamie at the current stage of his career very much reminds me of how I was and felt when I started out in property 7 years ago. I wish him the very best of luck in the future and know he will be successful in whatever he applies himself to.
Piers to Jamie:
Piers: What were your expectations for the programme, and have they been met?
Jamie: I came into the programme expecting to gain a deeper insight into a section of the property industry that I’ve never been exposed to before, and I definitely achieved my goal. I learnt more than I could have ever expected. As such, I have recognised that while I appreciate commercial property, my passion leans more towards residential developments.

Piers: What has been your highlight?
Jamie: The highlight of the programme has been connecting with people in the company that genuinely care about my development and future. It’s refreshing to know there are individuals I can call upon after the internship for advice as I go forward with my career, and I am truly grateful for that.
