1000 Subscribers ??

Hi everyone,

First, I would like to thank you for your continuous support and interest in the latest of AI in medicine.

Thanks to you, we are now more than 1000 subscribers to this newsletter. ??

In the next editions, I plan to focus on practical applications of AI in medicine.

The idea is to learn together the best and easiest ways to use AI for medical doctors without any technical background in daily practice.

Now, not tomorrow, not in ten years, but NOW.

Plus, the usual we did so far of keeping up with the most exciting advancements in the field.

Today, I want to share with you 10 ways to take your prompts to the next level as a medical doctor with real examples. You can use the free ChatGPT version to test and as your playground.

Prompting is just a tech-term that means: Tell the machine what you want, the machine gives you something back.

Here are 10 ways to get better answers for medical-related prompts:

1. Be as Specific as Possible

  • Prompt: "Tell me about diabetes."
  • Improved prompt: "What are the latest treatment guidelines for managing type 2 diabetes in adults?"

2. Describe the Setting and Provide the Context

  • Prompt: "How do I treat a wound?"
  • Improved prompt: "I'm treating a diabetic patient with a non-healing foot ulcer. What are the best practice wound care strategies?"

3. Experiment With Different Prompt Styles

  • Direct Question: "What causes hypertension?"
  • Request for a List: "List all known risk factors associated with the development of hypertension."
  • Request for a Summary: "Summarize the pathophysiology of hypertension in layman's terms."

4. Identify the Overall Goal of the Prompt First

  • Prompt: "Information on heart diseases."
  • Goal-Oriented Prompt: "Provide a comparison of the efficacy of beta-blockers versus ACE inhibitors in the treatment of congestive heart failure."

5. Ask it to Play Roles

  • Prompt: "Explain insulin resistance."
  • Role-Based Prompt: "Act as a nutritionist and explain how dietary choices impact insulin resistance in patients with prediabetes."

6. Iterate and Refine

If the initial response doesn't fully meet your needs, refine your prompt based on the information received. For example, if the response to a prompt on insulin resistance is too technical:

  • Refined Prompt: "Please simplify the explanation of how body cells become resistant to insulin in type 2 diabetes for a patient without a medical background."

7. Use Open-Ended Questions

  • Closed Question: "Does stress affect blood pressure?"
  • Open-Ended Question: "How does stress contribute to the regulation of blood pressure in hypertensive patients?"

8. Request Examples

When discussing complex medical procedures or conditions, asking for examples can clarify the concept:

  • General Prompt: "Describe the process of angiogenesis in tumor growth."
  • Example-Included Prompt: "Provide an example of how angiogenesis supports tumor growth in breast cancer."

9. Temporal Awareness

Incorporate time aspects to make your prompts more relevant:

  • General Prompt: "Post-operative care for knee replacement."
  • Time-Specific Prompt: "What are the best practices for post-operative care in the first six weeks after knee replacement surgery?"

10. Set Realistic Expectations

Understand the limitations of the AI tool and frame your questions accordingly:

  • Overreaching Prompt: "Latest treatments for Alzheimer's as of this year."
  • Realistic Prompt: "Summarize key advancements in Alzheimer's treatment up until the last update in 2021."

I hope this was helpful.

?? Please share it to anyone that might benefit from it.
