Harrison Clark, 6'3", 189, Model, UMASS Boston, Biology major, a rising senior, Black, and Cuban; is quiet, reserved, and focused. His Favorite food is French Toast; He enjoys low-budget horror movies, is a pescetarian, and has two German shepherds. Harrison is another example of #blackexcellence and #transcendence. Transcendence comes from the Latin prefix trans-, meaning "beyond," and the word scandare, meaning "to climb." When you achieve transcendence, you have gone beyond ordinary limitations.

Self-transcendence is the final and oft-forgotten peak of Maslow's pyramid. Before transcending yourself, however, you need to be self-actualized. The foundation of self-transcended people is caring for others and higher ideals.

Psychologist Abraham Maslow created the hierarchy of needs, representing the various needs and desires that makeup and motivate human behavior. The hierarchy is usually shown as a pyramid; the lowest levels are basic human necessities before rising to the peak of self-actualization.

Although Harrison is a successful model, athlete, and student, his prized accolades tell a different story. Harrison focuses his energy on improving the lives of the teens he works with through Teen Empowerment Boston (TE). TE's mission is to employ, train, and empower youth to, in collaboration with adults, create peace, equity, and justice. Harrison works with youth to help develop positive change in their lives and their communities. Through a unique asset-based youth organizing program implemented in Boston, TE employs youth ages 14-21 to identify the most pressing issues in their community and develop a strategy to address those issues.

Harrison is our 21st #100YoungMenofColor2021 celebrant and hero today, as part of our 100-day campaign to highlight positive aspects of our young men of color in Dorchester, MA. Harrison's commitment to his community is the very meaning of #transcdence. We salute and celebrate Harrison Clark today and every day.

Jideofor Ojukwu (Ji-da-fur O -Ju-Koo), 6 ft, Nigerian, BS, UMASS Boston, class of 2019, can be described as a #warrior, #caretaker, #healer, and #velvetsteel. First of all, he is a Warrior - A person who shows great vigor and courage. If you follow this young man on social media, you will catch him winning in every Professional fight contest he has entered into, where he displays his superior martial arts skills and incredible strength beyond his body weight and height. He is built like an unstoppable diesel mack truck coming through or an Amtrack bullet train at full speed, making its way towards its final destination. The word, #caretaker, is a person employed to look after people; The word, #healer, something or someone that alleviates distress or anguish, is also pronouns that help paint the picture of Jideofor.

During the COViD-19 pandemic, Jideofor provided health insurance to those uninsured and arranged transportation for them to get to their doctor's appointments; because he is passionate about the care and well-being of others. Finally, the word #velvetsteel best articulated by the poet Carl Sandburg wrote, "Not often in the story of humanity does a man arrive on earth who is both steel and velvet, who is as hard as a rock and soft as drifting fog, who holds in his heart and mind the paradox of terrible storm. Peace unspeakable and perfect." Jideofor is a person who possesses both a will of iron and a heart of tenderness, as seen in pictures of him and the kids at play. He is our hero and the young man we salute on the 19th day of our 100-day campaign - #100YoungMenofColor2021. Jideofor is a #warrior, a #caretaker, a #healer, and #velvetsteel. Would you please help me celebrate Jideofor Ojukwu, Today and every day?

Kareem Ferguson, an African-American born in Beantown, is an Americorp alumnus, where he taught at an intercity school English Language Arts and how to play tennis. Kareem, an avid tennis player, used this talent to help a countless number of underprivileged youth from Dorchester and surrounding communities, working with tenacity, a non-profit organization focused on assisting young adults in finishing high school and gaining a post-secondary education. Kareem is proud of placing three times nationally with Blacks in Government (B.I.G.) website competition in high school. He currently works at Tufts Hospital as a coordinator for the Cardiac Arrithymia center. His favorite food happens to be fried chicken with homemade mac & cheese. He has admitted to being a closet sneakerhead, gamer, low-key dapper, and a friendly individual. Kareem has been a member of his church since he was 15. He currently serves as a sound technician; previously, he was a youth leader and a church trustee. The spotlight of our young men has revealed a lineup of some of the most unique, intelligent, caring, and charismatic gentlemen I have ever had the privilege of meeting, who are ready to make a difference in their communities, their church, their schools, and wherever you find them. The word that best exemplifies Kareem's character is #humility - a modest or low-key view of one's importance, humbleness, modesty, humility, and gentleness.

Kareem Ferguson is a hero, son, brother, trusted friend, and so much more. We celebrate Kareem today during our 100-day campaign, #100YoungMenofColor2021.

What does an #all-American young adult male do and look like? While most of us may imagine a 6 foot, blond blue eye male, that is not whom I have the pleasure of highlighting today. One example is Dave Pierre Haitian American, 5'11", 200 lbs., UMASS Boston graduate, BS, class of 2020, who moved to the US at age 8; his favorite food is rice and legumes. Dave is a gifted mathematician and numerologist, and he is also a humanitarian who is passionate about helping others, saddened by humans suffering, poverty, and hunger, like the recent earthquake that hit Haiti, resulting in multiple fatalities. Dave is doing his best to help address these kinds of catastrophic disasters by working with non-profits like Heifer International. Dave speaks three languages English, Creole, French, and some Spanish. He is in a Management training program with ABG. Dave's entrepreneurial spirit is leading him to create multiple businesses with the plans to retire his family. Dave hopes to travel the world; wherever he goes, he is sure to make a difference—representing his country as an #all-American red-blooded patriot. Dave is our 21st #100YoungMenofColor2021 hero; during our 100-day campaign, we are so pleased to celebrate our black and brown young men; We must begin a positive dialogue and begin to change the narrative of how our young men are seen. It is up to us to uplift them, support them, and tell them they are valuable and how much we need their talent and contributions; as my High School told me many years ago, "I was articulate, with clearly defined goals." That has stuck with me now for more than forty years. Lady Marie Cately continues to speak to me from the grave. Let us hope our encouragement will have the same kind of impact on the young men and women we are fortunate to mentor: Dave Pierre, our #all-American hero, today and every day. We salute you!

Mall Mike is Jamaican, 5'9", 150 lbs., loves oxtails, rice, and peas, with cabbage, a good brother to vibe with, but there is so much more to his story. At 19 years of age, this young man, an entrepreneur, is #determined to make a difference in his community by making homeownership more readily accessible for many deserving minorities who desire a better quality of life for their loved ones. It is commendable to see a young man so heavily invested in the wellbeing of his community. Although he is interested in sports and is an avid basketball player, an athlete, options trader, and has some knowledge of trading in stocks and commodities, his passion is finding numerous opportunities to help blacks access homeownership. Miicah exemplifies the word #determined - which means to have a firm decision about a matter and being resolved not to change it. Let us celebrate him on this 20th day of our 100-day campaign as we uplift our #100YoungMenofColor2021.
