Joining a startup is irrational for most people.?

Launching a venture studio to build a hundred startups is totally irrational to pretty much everybody.

And while it felt uncertain, uncomfortable and even crazy to think anyone would care at the time… starting the UNLEARN podcast felt like a huge risk and act of vulnerability in the beginning—almost 4 years to the day when we put the first episode out into the world!

Yet here we are. 100 shows later and more learning than I could have ever imagined.?

Facing fear can have amazing upside in ways you could never imagine after the first step. So take it.?

I often now say that recording the podcast is the best personal development program I’ve ever invested in for myself.?

I listen and learn from the lessons of the guests that are kind enough to share their stories, experiences and mistakes with me.?

What they learned, unlearned and relearned to have the breakthroughs to extraordinary results.?

For me, recording the 100th show felt like a moment of reflection—and really I couldn’t think of a better focus for the show than inviting back Mark S. McNally, cofounder and Chief Nobody of Nobody Studios to go through the lessons we have learned from the last two years of building our venture studio.

This journey has been a transformational personal experience for me. From starting 13 companies, the highs and lows of entrepreneurship, raising capital, launching a crowdfunding campaign and helping to realize our vision for creating a vehicle that brings together ideas, resources, and dreams to impact the world beyond their own lifetimes.

Where Building a Machine (of Machines)

As we continue to build out Nobody Studios one of the most important strategies of the Studio is the Machine of Machines.?

To be a world-leading venture studio there are many capabilities we need to create to support our startups, founders, investors and teams.?

Yet in our studio we see the capabilities we need to create for internal use, and think how we can turn those capabilities into companies in their own right.?

If we’ve got that problem, surely other startups and businesses have got that problem.

One of the many benefits of building a portfolio of companies is that our companies can also be initial customers for one another.?

We started this strategy from day one, by building Ovationz on top of ThoughtForma. Two companies working together to make 1 + 1 = 11. Collaborating together to grow together.?

Having companies work together in this way provides a virtuous learning and compound effect for the Studio and portfolio overall.?

Yes, we will turn traditional cost centers to revenue sources for the Studio.?

The initial customers of many of our companies will be other companies in our portfolio — then companies outside.?

It is our Machine of Machines strategy to help us rapidly scale our studio, create high quality products and value for all companies with the Nobody Studios ecosystem.?

The latest teams to join the Studio, The Adjacent Possible in the Patenting and Intellectual Property Management space, and Ibex Labs/Punchcards in the Web3 space only support this strategy and help us scale faster.?

All The Nobodies

End Q1 for 2023 is also a moment to reflect. This week we had a Nobody Studios All-Hands meeting.

We aim to do these every month or so to keep everyone connected and aware of what we’re working on.

This month we had 42 people on the call. It’s another reminder of the distance we’ve traveled. From a few folks in a garage to a globally distributed business.?

There’s still a lot to do. But it’s special to see the progress.
