100 Things I Know About Marketing (Part 4)

76. Customers want their expectations met and exceeded. It’s simple, really.

77. Sometimes marketers need to be reactive. Having a clear understanding of your values makes it easier to react.

78. If you try to stand for everything, you stand for nothing.

79. The industry is influenced significantly by major technological and social changes- read and follow the voices that are on top of the changing industry.

80. Don’t get stuck in the data. Analytics influence but gut instinct, experience and creativity drives decision-making.

81. Teamwork. It’s not possible to learn every skill needed to be successful in your role. Learn how to hire and work with a team.

82. The best way to learn a social media platform is to get on it. Find me on TikTok @modernmarketer .

83. At the end of the day your job is to build relationships with your audience, figure out what works and do more of that.

84. Lead with purpose only if 'purpose' is authentically part of your mission.

85. Consistency of message builds trust and lets consumers know you care about your product.?

86. Content should lead readers on a journey, not stuff them into a pipeline.

87. Brand relevance is the overlap of what you want to say and what your customers are interested in.

88. Don’t create content for the sake of creating content.

89. When in doubt ask your customers.

90. Successful marketers channel their passion and their brand authentically online and offline. If marketing is not your passion, it will show through your work.

91. “It’s more important that you be passionate about what you do all day than it is to be passionate about the product being sold” - Simon Sinek. You have to be genuinely interested in the dynamism of bringing new ideas each day to reach your audience.

92. The effective CMO continually asks herself, “How can I transform our marketing and our business?”

93. “Fast, Cheap, and Good…pick two. If it’s fast and cheap, it won’t be good. If it’s cheap and good, it won’t be fast. If it’s fast and good ,it won’t be cheap.” Thanks, Jim Jarmusch.

94. Great marketing starts with asking questions. Questions help us draw out underlying ideas and presumptions we can’t otherwise access.

95. The farther you get into your career, the more time you need to spend thinking vs doing. Take time to think.

96. Smart marketing is obsessing about outcomes not activity.

97. Listening and gathering data is the easy part. It’s what you do next that impacts everything.

98. Marketing leaders do not need to be the smartest person in the room. Mentor, coach and lead people in ways that bring out their creativity.

99. Leaders are never remembered for the ideas they came up with, but rather for the direction they set and the support they provide to individuals and the team as a whole.

100. Be a business leader first, and a marketer second.
