"Because it is complex and poetic, Rogala’s work can seem daunting to approach, never mind fully grasp. Yet underlying all his work — from the written word in his poems to the most elaborate fusion of music, movement, and visual art in his operas — is the notion of unfolding or unfurling. It almost seems that the great philosopher of multiplicity Henri Bergson had Rogala’s artistic explorations in mind, when, in The Creative Mind, he writes, “[W]e have so much trouble in distinguishing between an evolution and an unfurling, between the radically new and a rearrangement of the pre-existing, in fact, between creation and simple choice, that this distinction cannot be clarified in too many directions at once.” This distinction, I should add, is something Rogala has spent a lifetime clarifying. Bergson goes on to use a phrase that seems, uncannily, to describe Rogala’s work: “Let us say then, that in duration considered as a creative evolution there is perpetual creation of possibility….”
