100 million today!

Today, we're celebrating! We've just passed the 100 million mark - that's 100 million questions delivered and completed on Siyavula since our inception in 2012.

In 2012, our vision was to create an integrated learning experience for high school learners - incorporating the textbooks we had already written with an online practice platform that would allow learners to practise and master the concepts they needed to understand, in order to excel in Mathematics and Physical Sciences.

Ten years later, Siyavula is reaching hundreds of thousands of learners across South Africa - and these learners are completing millions of questions every month. Huge growth in numbers has seen Siyavula deliver more than 22 million questions this year alone! The graph below shows the growth in daily questions completed from 2020 to date. A substantial number of learners also access our online textbooks to help them learn - for example, 44% of all Grade 10 Mathematics learners, and almost 60% of Grade 12 Physical Sciences learners used our online textbooks in 2021.

The support of partners like MTN, UNICEF and the Department of Basic Education enabled us to open our online practice freely to all South African learners, and with our website zero-rated on major networks, Siyavula is able to reach learners in poorly resourced schools and rural areas.

Delivering 100 million questions is a proud moment for all of us who work at Siyavula. At the heart of what we do is a deep belief in the impact we are able to make in the lives and futures of learners. This impact is not always seen in the big numbers. The impact is felt by the learner who realises that mastering maths concepts is not beyond their capabilities. It is felt by the student who receives a bursary to study Engineering. It is felt by the teacher who sees their class average rise by 20% in a term. We have many such stories - from learners, students and teachers alike - that tell of the impact Siyavula's support has made.

We know that achieving good results in Mathematics and Physical Sciences opens doors for learners to further education, the digital economy and the new world of work. For us, it was also important to establish a concrete link between achieving good results and post-school opportunities. This has resulted in collaborations with partners who offer career guidance, bursaries and scholarships, training, internships and even jobs. Our learners are thus provided with a clear path and motivation not simply to do well at school, but to create a bright future for themselves.

To all the learners who practise on our platform, and all the teachers who use Siyavula to support their teaching, thank you for helping us reach this milestone.
