100 Marketing Ideas: #5

Stick things in the post to people.

'OMG' people will declare. 'Direct mail is dead' they'll say.

For this exact reason, you should post things to people. Because no-one else is doing it.

So what should you put in the post?

Well, for starters, it can't be boring. We've all heard of the concept of 'lumpy mail' - where you send something in an envelope that makes people pick it up and think 'I wonder what's in here.' So make sure it's something that captures their attention inside and outside of the envelope. Something that makes them want to call you or send you an email afterwards.

DO NOT MAKE IT SHIT OR IT WON'T WORK.

Be select which companies you're going to send it to and make sure the addressee is the right person to be receiving it. Send 100 of them. Follow up by email or by phone. It's a simple process but one that can be both results-effective and cost-effective if done properly.

Does this sound like advice from 1995? Probably. But remember all marketing has an ROI. This is just a form of marketing and if done properly, the ROI is going to work for you.

Remember: your competitors are NOT doing this.

Hi Simon, I’ve been following your Marketing Ideas as pointed out to me by Joe Curtis. Recently I received a letter drop from Queensland X-Ray with a simple DL flyer and a magnet stuck on top and the designs matched which I thought was really amazing. It was a simple and creative idea that opened my eyes to the possibilities of direct marketing in this form. Thanks for the information and ideas.

Australia Post will have you as employee (err) of the month! I agree though...can work really well if done right.
