The 100 African Women Keeping You Safe Online
Today last week, Friday, March 8th, was an extraordinary day! Fueled by coffee and operating on little sleep, the days leading up to the event were a whirlwind of activities, including preparations, last-minute adjustments, and a demonstration of the acyberschool team's dedication. The decision to move the venue from the University of Nairobi's Chiromo campus to the Strathmore SBM building just one day before the event, and the replacement of previously procured vendors with nominees and volunteers for moderating and hosting, added an extra layer of excitement to the already electrifying atmosphere. This change was not merely logistical but a strategic decision to involve the T1CWWA nominees in the event, allowing them to serve as moderators, presenters, and panelists. This approach embedded the essence of the T1CWWA initiative into the event itself, providing these remarkable women with a platform to shine, be recognized, and inspire others. We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who made the day possible.
The event marked a significant collaboration among the University of Nairobi, Strathmore University University of Rwanda, University of Lagos, University of Witwatersrand, University of Simad, and numerous African regulators led by the Communication Authority of Kenya. With Konza Technopolis Development Authority representing the Government of Kenya, the African Advanced Level Telecommunications Institute The African Advanced Level Telecommunications Institute (AFRALTI) representing regulators across Africa, Liquid Intelligent Technologies representing network operators, and Kenya Private Sector Alliance (KEPSA) representing Kenya's private sector, this event was more than an unveiling. It was a bold statement of our shared vision for a more inclusive cybersecurity landscape in the region.
The inaugural T1CWWA cohort's launch in 2024 was deliberately scheduled to coincide with International Women's Day, celebrating women's contributions to the traditionally male-dominated field of cybersecurity. The initiative drew inspiration from the stark realities highlighted in Acyberschool's report on the case for diversity in cybersecurity, revealing a projected cybersecurity workforce shortage of 2.3 million across the continent by 2022, as per the World Economic Forum.
This shortage, coupled with a significant gender disparity in the cybersecurity workforce, not only amplifies the talent gap but also stifles innovation. The "Top 100 Cybersecurity Women to Watch in Africa" initiative, therefore, serves as a beacon of change, aiming to inspire young women to pursue cybersecurity careers, thereby enhancing the sector's diversity and strengthening our collective defenses against cyber threats. By celebrating the achievements of women in cybersecurity, future generations will be inspired to enter the field thus contributing to a more diverse and innovative workforce.
Why T1CWWA is a Game-Changer:
The T1CWWA event transcended a mere ceremony; it was a convergence of ideas, insights, and inspiration focused on fostering a more diverse cybersecurity talent pool in Africa. From involving nominees in panel discussions to executing the event in a way that fostered a sense of community and purpose, the event exemplified the power of collaboration and diversity. It was not only about recognizing achievements but also about igniting a movement toward a more inclusive cybersecurity landscape in Africa.
The "Top 100 Cybersecurity Women to Watch in Africa for 2024" event, hosted at Strathmore University's Main Campus in Nairobi, Kenya, commenced with a heartfelt welcome and introduction by Evalyn Oloo , Digital Development Consultant and CEO of Acyberschool, and Dr. Batamuliza Jennifer Head of the Data Driven Hub at the University of Rwanda, underlining the celebration of International Women's Day and the significance of recognizing leading women in cybersecurity.
The event was moderated by Evelyn Kasina , Jacklyne Mbuthia and Hilda Chebet along with Nanbaan Pwaspo, ensuring smooth transitions between segments and fostering engagement. The keynote address was delivered by Dr. Thembi Mayayise, a Senior Lecturer at the University of the Witwatersrand, who inspired attendees with insights into the empowerment of women in cybersecurity, highlighting the challenges and opportunities ahead. The unveiling segments were introduced by notable figures including Prof. Noluxolo Gcaza from The Cyberculture Foundation, Aashika Bava from Investec, and Nabihah Rishad, Product and Research Lead at Serianu, each bringing attention to the remarkable contributions of the honorees.
Throughout the day, several panel discussions were held featuring experts like Olayemi Helen Afolayan (Lena's voice), Fiona Kimuu, Apriele Moraa, Maureen Gate, Faith Kwamboka, and Mercy Lang'at , CISA, alongside Kagwiria R. Nkonge of ITU, Jessica Wanjohi of the Communication Authority of Kenya, and Ben Roberts of Liquid Telecom. These discussions delved into the impact of diversity on innovation in cybersecurity and the importance of inclusive cybersecurity practices. The event not only served as a platform for recognition but also facilitated meaningful dialogue and exchange of ideas, strengthening connections within the cybersecurity community.
The outcome exceeded our expectations. The panel discussions, interactions, and sheer energy of the unveiling marked a resounding success. As we prepare for the awards ceremony on June 8, 2024, in Kenya, I am reminded that this event is just the beginning of the larger T1CWWA initiative.
Being named one of the Top 100 Cybersecurity Women to Watch in Africa is not merely an accolade; it is a recognition that highlights these women as pioneers in their field across the continent. This acknowledgment opens doors to enhanced visibility among potential employers and partners, exclusive networking opportunities with industry leaders worldwide, and serves as a mark of credibility that can lead to speaking engagements, policy influence, and investment opportunities. Beyond the professional benefits, being listed as a T1CWWA is a personal victory, validating the dedication these women have shown in their careers, motivating them to continue breaking barriers, and serving as an inspiration for the next generation of female cybersecurity professionals in Africa.
