10 years, and five tips later...

Last week I put the 1,000th issue of C_NCENTRATE to bed and hit send. This week people sent me some lovely emails, DMs. A few asked for advice for starting their own newsletters/writing regularly and I ended up with five tips. I thought I would share in case they help anyone else out there:

1) Tone is your weapon. Without it, you’re just another chatbot drowning in the noise. ?? People crave real, raw, unapologetic content. Be human. Be bold. Be unforgettable. Joan Westenberg taught me this.

2) Curation ≠ Collection. ?? It’s not about dumping links. It’s about picking the critical few that move the needle. If you’re not selective, you’re just noise. Be the signal.

3) Don’t be afraid to make people uncomfortable. The future demands discomfort. If what you’re saying doesn’t make them think (or squirm a little), you’re playing it too safe.

4) Highlight the gaps in what people think they know. Your readers crave what they don’t know yet. ?? Find the blind spots in conventional wisdom, and let them see what’s really next. Ben Thompson is a master in this with Stratechery.com

5) Know your 2%. The ones who always read, reply, and fill out surveys. They’re your real audience. Write for them.

BONUS) Facts are everywhere. Interpretation is rare. Don’t just spit out data—cut through the noise and show why it matters right now. ?? Benedict Evans is utterly brilliant at this.

The new era starts next week...
