As someone who recruited for over 20 years, I can tell you that recruiters are invaluable allies—not just when you're job hunting but throughout your career. Whether you need insights about the market or help in filling key roles on your team, a strong relationship with a recruiter is a game changer.
Think of recruiters as professional matchmakers. Their job is to make the right match for both the company and the candidate but remember, they're working for the company, not you. Understanding their motivations and maintaining a mutually beneficial relationship can help you stand out when it matters most.
The best time to get to know recruiters is when you don’t need a job. Build these relationships early by returning calls, sharing industry insights, and helping them find candidates, even when you're not actively looking for your next opportunity. Establishing good rapport is smart career sense and can lead to valuable opportunities down the road.
