Technology has transformed and continues to change almost every aspect of our lives. Here are 10 ways that technology has changed things in recruitment.
1. [ Databases have saved the need for filing ]
Some of the more experienced recruiters out there still remember the days of getting a new role and then hitting the old resume filing cabinet and looking through resumes one by on. Whole offices or rooms would be dedicated to storing hard copy resumes. These days, data can be stored digitally and the old fire hazard hard copy files are no longer needed.
2. [ Job Boards changed the way we advertise ]
Postings would be sent to the local papers, schools, universities, community centers and so on. With no idea who would actually see and be able to respond. Then came the internet and job boards, a far easier way to reach your target audience. Even now, job boards have changed and job aggregators will advertise your roles for you.
3. [ Internet & Email changed communication ]
Interview invitations used to be literally sent out in the mail like wedding invitations. Applications would be sent, and possibly lost, by post. You no longer have to work out the exact number of stamps needed, these messages and communications can be sent at the push of a button. However, don’t forget to attach that resume!
4. [ Social Media changed how we keep in contact ]
Even databases are out of data, social media means you can keep in contact with a huge number of candidates easily. You can advertise your roles to an active audience and promote your branding, testimonials and talent proposition. It almost seems like the recruitment team is becoming more like a communications department day by day.
5. [ Mobile phones: We can apply on the go ]
Perhaps this is the area where recruitment is changing the most currently. Suddenly we can receive job notifications directly to our phones and apply while we are on the go. Wherever you may be, on holiday, on your lunch break, information about new opportunities is just a swipe of a phone screen away.
6. [ Remote Working & Networking changed how and who we recruit ]
Being able to use video conferencing and remote logging in has never been so important. Especially for Tech companies, people are being increasingly hired for remote work and office cultures are permanently changing. No more chats over the water cooler, instant messaging is the new way.
7. [ Response times are almost instant ]
With all the access to new communication response times, the time to hire has dramatically been reduced. Now more waiting for the mail man, hiring decisions are now only held back by the how it takes the recruiters or hiring manager to use the new tools he had been given.
8. [ Algorithms and programs can make finding candidates easier ]
There is no longer even the need to read every resume in the filing cabinet again. From creating Boolean search strings, using key word identifiers, recruiters now have tools to find suitable candidates at the touch of a few buttons. Some social media services will send recommended candidates right to your inbox as soon as you post. Although things have been made easier, it still does take a specific skill set to proactively recruit those candidates who are not actively looking. That is what 1010 does best!
9. [ Compliance and Transparency are easier than ever ]
By using applicant tracking systems we can now keep records easily, document the recruitment process and demonstrate we made the most fair and correct hiring choice. Automated forms can help make sure that no step or candidate is missed.
10. [ Big Data lets us make better decisions ]
Are our job postings working? Does our referral program produce the best candidates? Does GPA predict performance? Where are the road blocks in our recruitment process? Tracking information and data can help give us a bigger picture into how the recruitment process is working and what we need to improve on.
