On this Native American Heritage Month, we celebrate and honor the story of “Popeye” Osceola – the youngest member of the?Miccosukee Tribe of Indians Business Council, an?Everglades?advocate, and an avid skater who helped found the?Miccosukee Trail Skate Park. South Florida and what we now call Miami is the ancestral land of Native People who have protected the Everglades for decades. “My grandfather impressed upon me the need to protect this land as it protected us,” says Osceola in his?Everglades Story. One mission, one priority - restore and protect America's Everglades.
关于我们
Since 1993, it has been our mission to lead efforts to restore and protect the greater Everglades ecosystem. The Foundation recognizes the irreplaceable environmental and economic value of America’s "River of Grass." Established as a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit, the funds we raise go towards scientific research, education on the Greater Everglades ecosystem and grants to our conservation partners. The Foundation also supports necessary legal actions to help protect the Everglades. We leverage science and advocacy to help shape the decisions of stakeholders, focus on research, collaborate with fellow organizations and supply grants for the advancement of environmental awareness. The Foundation's world-class science department conducts and sponsors scientific research and analysis; our policies, positions and actions are determined by facts. The Foundation serves as a leader in building consensus for action in support of our mission. Our strength comes from the support we receive from our partners, board, staff and true believers who know we can correct mistakes of the past for the millions of people who depend on the Everglades' future health.

In the final Preserving Paradise 2024 session, the program’s inaugural cohort saw Everglades Restoration up close with a tour of the Everglades Agricultural Area (EAA) Reservoir and the Caloosahatchee River (C-43) West Basin Storage Reservoir. A partnership with The Everglades Foundation, Captains For Clean Water, and the Sanibel Captiva Chamber of Commerce, the program brought together 20 regional business leaders, immersing them in water quality science and advocacy. The Everglades Foundation’s Everglades Literacy Program team of educators recently attended the Florida Association of Science Supervisors and the Florida Association of Science Teachers conferences. We connected with more than 500 teachers statewide through hosting an Everglades Literacy Teacher Training and presenting two sessions to bring Everglades Literacy to the classroom. One of our sessions highlighted our amazing partnership with Inwater Research Group, Inc., co-presenting a session titled How Nonprofits Support Place-Based Environmental Education in the Classroom. We are proud to work with other science-based organizations that create meaningful, hands-on, and experiential environmental education for teachers and students statewide. It was an absolutely pleasure working with Rebecca Mott and Yashira Cruz Rodriguez, M.A. from IRG and with my fellow teammates Tate Vangellow and Tessa Whalen.

Did you catch our “Miami’s Water and The Everglades” video series? ?? ?? ?? From the Everglades to the #BiscayneBay aquifer, through canals, the Biscayne Bay and to your tap – Miami Waterkeeper's Rachel Silverstein, Ph.D. and our own Meenakshi Chabba, Ph.D. took us on a journey to understand why “It’s All about the Water”. By watching, liking, and sharing this series, you helped bring this journey to life and educate others on why this matters! Our organizations' year-round work of protecting South Florida’s water is only possible when our communities understand its importance in their day-to-day lives. It is thanks to supporters like Knight Foundation and The Jorge M. Pérez Family Foundation that we can work together towards a more resilient Miami-Dade County! Missed an episode?
