10 Ways to Create the Perfect Yoga Home Space

10 Ways to Create the Perfect Yoga Home Space

Why create a space at home? Because the past years saw a huge shift in the way we live, and our homes have become one-stop shops. We’ve had to adjust to working from home, working out at home and being limited how many times we leave our home. As many of us settled into life at home, we moved a little less in our bodies, and became more stressed in our minds. We need an escape and a safe way to de-stress.

Everyone should have a sanctuary within their own home, a space where you can escape from intrusions.?By creating your own space for yoga classes and meditation sessions you can have your very own in-home private retreat that allows you to focus more on your practice, and less on the outside noise. Here's how I recommend you create the perfect in-home retreat to escape without going anywhere.

1. Find the perfect space for you

Look through your home to find underused rooms or hidden nooks that you could dedicate to yourself. You'd be surprised how much can be made from just a little corner! Don't fret if you don't have a spare room or open space to reserve for yoga, because yoga can be done anywhere. Instead, find a space that makes you happy or is a place you’re comfortable with, and grow the space along with your yoga practice.

?2. Clear your space and clear your mind

It’s very hard to feel relaxed and comfortable in a cluttered space. A cluttered space can be distracting, and remind you of all the things you need to do, start or finish. Clutter also has a negative effect on your energy – so an open and clear space for you to relax in is exactly what you need during your yoga practice.

?3. Change Your Mood with Lighting

Next, to set a relaxing and comforting mood, pay special attention to the lighting. Lighting greatly affects your mood, so think about how you want to feel when you are in your yoga sanctuary. If you'd like a bright and happy space, let the natural light in or create a sunlit effect with bright lights. If you'd want to increase a sanctuary-like atmosphere, use candlelight, lamps or use lights on dimmers.

4. Add Things that Help you find Peace

Since you are creating your sanctuary, add in elements that contribute to the relaxing and supportive atmosphere of the space.?Choose pieces that will make your yoga space instantly invoke a sense of peace and signal that it is your place to retreat from the world.

5. Select a Color Palette

Entering your private yoga retreat should change your mood and calm your spirit. Choose colors that help to reinforce the fact that the area is for relaxing. Consider colors that make you happy, brighten your spirit, and give your space a comforting feeling.

6. Use a Yoga Mat in your Personal Space

A yoga mat is designed for a comfortable and safe performance of poses. They are great for any surface, prevent slipping and will help cushion your joints during your practice. Also, consider the act of unrolling your mat and stepping on to that space as the transition you need to move into your practice. By stepping into that positive energy, the mat represents truly committing to yourself and your wellbeing.

7. Shift your Mood with Scent

Scent can evoke profound shifts in mood. Set the tone for your space and add to the relaxing experience by using scents that you like. Consider burning incense or sage, lighting a candle, or diffusing your favorite essential oil to elevate your space.

8. Use Props

Yoga props, or accessories, can enhance your practice. Props can change your practice and are meant to make it easier for you. Using blocks and/or a bolster can help elevate the floor level for more flexibility or stability in certain poses. A strap or band can be used to increase your flexibility. A blanket can help cushion for your joints.?Consider using a stool, or chair to provide additional support for stability and flexibility.

9. Make your Space a True Yoga Space

Just as you should have separate spaces for work, eating and sleep, you should have a separate space for yoga. When doing yoga, you should be in a calm and relaxed head space.?Let your sanctuary represent the space in which your mind might experience some relief from the stress-laden, chaotic, and unpredictable nature of daily life.

10. Feel at Home in Your Body

Ultimately, your in-home sanctuary should make you feel safe. And to feel safe you also need to feel at home in your body. Yoga, breathwork and meditation are the path to feeling at home in your body because they teach you to be aware of your thoughts, feelings and sensations by helping you move within. By paying attention to your body, you can learn to look after yourself on all levels. Using time in your sanctuary to check in with how you feel inside is a good way to disengage from the chaos around you and reconnect you to your own center of strength.?
