10 Ways to Celebrate Women’s History Month
March is Women’s History Month, and March 8th is International Women’s Day! It’s a time to honor the achievements, resilience, and contributions of women-identifying people worldwide. At buildOn, we’re so proud of the incredible women who make up our movement, and the hard work they do to unite people and ignite a more equitable future. Here are 10 meaningful ways to celebrate this month while making a lasting impact:
10. Support Women-Owned Businesses
Help women thrive economically by shopping from women entrepreneurs. Whether it’s a local shop or an online store, any support you can give makes a difference.?
9. Explore Women’s Art and Culture
Celebrate the creativity of women by visiting museums, galleries, or online exhibits showcasing female artists, writers, and creators.
8. Amplify Women’s Voices
Share stories, achievements, and perspectives of women—especially those from underrepresented communities—on social media or in conversations. Spread awareness of women’s issues.
7. Organize a Book Club Focused on Female Authors
Dive into books written by women and discuss their impact. Highlight authors who inspire change and resilience.
6. Volunteer at Women’s Shelter Organizations
Women’s shelters always need volunteers—and buildOn students are often among them! From organizing donations to assembling care kits, you can join them and create meaningful change in your community.
5. Host or Attend Local Events Celebrating Female Voices
Participate in events in your area that center the unique perspectives and voices of women. buildOn frequently hosts women-focused events, like our Boston International Women’s Day Event on Thursday, March 6th. buildOn students in Detroit will be attending Slalom Detroit’s IWD Event that day as well.? If there aren’t any events happening near you, consider hosting one to connect with inspiring women and allies!
4. Support Organizations with Fair Hiring Practices
Advocate for gender equity by supporting companies and nonprofits that prioritize fair hiring and equal opportunities for women.
3. Donate to Support buildOn’s Adult Literacy Program
The majority (about 80%) of participants in our Adult Literacy Program are women. This program provides adult literacy classes in low income countries, helping women there gain the skills to support their families and communities.
2. Support Organizations That Fund Women’s Businesses
Donate to or promote organizations that provide seed money and resources to women entrepreneurs, helping them launch and grow their businesses. As part of completing our Adult Literacy Program, participants receive seed capital to start their own businesses right in their communities.
1. Build a School on a buildOn Trek
Join a buildOn Trek to help construct a school in a rural community in a low-income country. On our worksites, we ensure that men and women from the community work together in equal numbers to build the school, promoting gender equity. Once built, these schools have equal enrollment for boys and girls, creating future opportunities for women through education.
Why Women’s History Month Matters
Women’s History Month is more than a celebration—it’s a call to action. By supporting women and girls, we’re building a more equitable world where everyone has the opportunity to thrive. Join us in creating opportunities for women and transforming communities by donating to buildOn today!
