10 Ways to Add Life to Your Living Room
The living room is where we come to think, to slow down the world for a second. We all love our living rooms. It is the heart of our homes, where we get to chill and spend time with our family and friends.
For me, I love being on the set with my family. I love the magic of movies. I love living rooms that are full of life. In fact, the best theatre I've done, not to dis IMAX or Nairobi Cinema, I've done right in the living room.
Have you recently looked at your living room? How does it make you feel? Warm and happy, or jittery? Being a major hub in the home, your living room is the entry for first impressions, creating a lasting impact. When you entertain, it is your showplace. The last thing you want for your living room is a messy place and saggy coaches, ruining the scene. Today, we give you tips on how you can add life to your living room. Sit back, enjoy, and learn!
- Start From The Floor Up.
Carpets create a great, grounded feeling in a living room. When you introduce color and pattern, it adds a sense of energy in the entire living space. You could do a vibrant yet soft geometrical rug. Or splash it out with bright patterns on your pillows and sofa by using a textured carpet in a single color to create visual interest.
When getting the carpet, ensure you pick the right size, placing it properly for proper proportion. Remember; your look, your budget. In matters size, a good rule of thumb is purchasing a rug which leaves about 8–10 inches of between its edge and the living room walls, or one large enough for at least two legs of every piece of furniture to be placed under.
2. Pile On The Throw Pillows.
Throw pillows add both texture and color, making the living room feel finished. The easiest way you can brighten your monochromatic sofa is using layer throw pillows to add color. For instance, velvet pillows specifically bring an instant feeling of comfort and elegance. These throw pillows as well add warmth to the room, inviting everyone to get comfortable.
3. Create Contrast In Your Living Room.
Block light and dark colors on base objects; this makes your bright patterns and colors to stand out even more. Having started with your carpet, pick out colors which are already in it, applying them to your surroundings to bring out a subtly matched design. Can you see the color tones featured in both the carpet and other furnishings?
Add a shot of color. Upon picking bright wall colors or throw pillows, bringing in color is the quickest way of bringing about a dramatic change. Remember not to go too overboard with matching colors to look too ‘matchy-matchy.' Carefully scatter the colors throughout the room, to give a stable yet vibrant feeling.
4. Clean Up Your Living Room, To Keep It Organised.
The living room is the catch-all for family activities in most cases; no wonder it ends up being all messy and jumbled. Fortunately, an easy solution is getting rid of the stuff! Btw, the more things you have which lies around, the more claustrophobic and less welcoming your space will feel. Many of us are victims of being spendthrifts and too clingy and attached to the stuff we buy. Before you can even think of purchasing something new for your living room, start stripping. You will notice that once the place is clear and clean, you don't need to add more things, after all.
5. Add Some Art.
Eye-catching art is a great way to introduce color and pattern in your living room. People naturally notice artworks. Predominantly patterned art pieces will be real show stoppers for your living room.
As you add art, remember to make your living room personal as well by displaying something meaningful. Put your photo on display or a sweet note, making it feel more like home, and bringing in a bit of your personal history.
6. Allow Your Furniture To Breathe.
The most common and biggest mistake made by many in their living rooms is to push everything up against the walls, to leave a 'doughnut' in the middle. Allow your sofa to breathe by pulling it away from the wall. Six inches from the wall is good to give it space. The extreme pushing the couch and other furniture to the wall is that they end up tarnishing and peeling of the wall colors.
7. Be Wise with Cushions.
When it comes to cushions, they are comforting and help in filling the scene in the lounge room. They are a safe way of bringing a bit of brightness into your home. Pattern clash them with a playful on-trend way to enhance your spectacle.
8. Implement Comfortable And Flattering Lighting.
The style of your living room does not matter if it is not well-lit. Use proper lighting to set the mood, and to help define distinct spaces in your living space. You need soft, ambient light, which makes everyone who steps into the living room look good. Task lighting is critical, too for your book of poetry reading or that game of chess.
Hanging a chandelier adds an elegant touch, as well as a table lamp casting pleasant ambient lighting. Where possible, use floor lamps or sconces to supplement the daylight. Only pick a table lamp upon choosing the place a table will sit. Ensure that it is a proportionate fit; small lamp, small-scale table, large lamp, large table.
9. Spruce Up Your Centre Table.
Your center or coffee table speaks a lot in your living room. To spruce it up, you can get a vase and fill it by bringing nature inside your living, for example, by using tulips. Do you know how you see great pictures of a cup of coffee and a stack of few books? This is the hack! Stack about three inspiring coffee table books of the same color and size, and remove any other clutter.
10. Edit Your Living Space
Let me exemplify this with a job assignment or any task that requires writing for that matter. You do not want to submit an assignment that is not well organized, with the spelling and grammar checker highlighting the content throughout your work. You instead proofread and edit it to present the best work.
The same applies to your living room. Remove items that are stained, ugly, or ripped. Sort the things into piles or areas. Simply put, know what needs to be kept, gotten rid of, and fixed. Clear off the table surfaces. Choose a few knickknacks which can be arranged to be seen, with relocating or getting rid of the rest.
There are specific parts of the house that I think embellishment feels inviting and cozy, and the living room is the exact environment. 5 年Awesome article. I am a big fan of minimalism and functionality. Also, living rooms according to my understanding are where we all gather for general socializing and entertainment and they in a way should accommodate our tastes and preferences in a subtle way.?
