10 Types of Roommates You’ll Encounter in College – Which one are you?

Ah, the college life. There’s nothing like coordinating bathroom schedules or having late-night talks with your roommate. That’s right, your roommate. Let’s face it, college life wouldn’t be as good as it is without building those fond memories with your roommate. If you’re in a college dorm, a spacious apartment, or a shared bedroom space, be prepared to have a roommate.?

This person may be an old friend, an acquaintance, or someone entirely new to you. It’s safe to say, you’ll never fully know your new roomie until you finally live with them. Ever wondered what your roommates could be like? As always, we’ve got you covered. Here are the top 10 types of roommates you’ll encounter in college. Which roommate are you?

  1. The Partier

This is one you’ll probably find throughout your whole college career. Meet The Partier: the roommate who parties hard and parties often. Friends are always over and The Partier is usually down to go out at any time – anywhere. This roommate will always have an excuse to throw a party or go to one. At any moment, The Partier can be caught saying things like:?

“I’m stressed; I need to go out tonight!”?

“It’s Tuesday, we should go out tonight!”

“I just came from class; we should party or something!”?

If you’re trying to do something fun, try going out with your partying roommate. They will be your best friend – knowing every type of event happening on campus and around town. If you’re trying to stay in, The Partier may be caught stumbling in at wee hours of the night – disturbing your most precious beauty sleep. In any regard, this is one roommate that’ll be hard to miss.?

  1. The Studier?

Going to college is a chance to pursue your academic dreams, but you’ll encounter roommates who will have you rethink your entire college life as a student. Meet The Studier. Door opened or closed; this roommate is caught studying all the time! To be top in their class is The Studier’s top priority and can snap at the thought of a B on an exam. The Studier is constantly completing assignments or preparing for the next big test. The only way to their heart is to discuss their goals and study habits – which will somehow take hours to explain. The studier may seem quiet, but any disturbances can be your last. A quiet living space is key to their success.

  1. The Slob

There’s messy. And then, there’s The Slob - taking messy to another level. This roommate is known to have no criteria for cleanliness - clothes wandering as they wish throughout the room with trash trailing behind. Impurities consist of empty food containers and unwashed clothes. Notice an underwear hanging from the corner lampstand? No need to worry. This roommate will assure you no action is needed. Brace yourself for this one. It will get ugly.?

  1. The Neat Freak

A freshly made bed, polished desk with books organized in alphabetical order - this roommate will strive for perfection to keep everything permanently clean. The Neat Freak will always have their side of the room clean, vacuumed, and organized, and will make you feel like your side is a complete catastrophe. Seriously, one day, it’ll be real for you, too.

  1. The Talker

Small talk doesn’t exist with this roommate. Introducing, The Talker. This roommate loves talking... And will talk for hours – especially when you’re in the middle of submitting an assignment for class, or on your way out to meet up with some friends. This roommate will pop in at random moments of the day and start talking - with little to no breaks in-between topics. Topics could include their day, their night, or how the school should make major improvements. They may even talk themselves into hanging out with you. In any case, at the first sign of an escape, run for it!?

  1. The Committed One

Whether it’s long-distance or in close living quarters - this roommate is in a committed relationship and is always with their boo! With cliché photos plastered on the wall or saved as their screen-savers, this roommate is never alone. If The Committed One is in a long-distance relationship, you’ll always find them on the phone talking to each other. If their lover lives in town, more than likely you’ll see them together… and we mean always and forever. They will always be together and in your space – in which case, you’ll end up with two roommates. Yup, the insanity. We know.?

  1. Snatchers

Ever wondered what happened to the charger that was on your side of the room? Perhaps objects such as pens and honeybuns go missing without a trace? Meet the Snatchers. Snatchers think that everything in the room or apartment can be shared – which is cool if you’re okay with that. These roommates eat up the food, borrow your clothes and take your books. Yes, even your books. There is no shame in their game.

  1. The Loner

This roommate lives in the room... and never leaves. Never. Meet The Loner. The Loner prefers the comfort of their own room—so much so they almost never leave. This roommate is always around and is mostly seen sitting at their desk on a computer, reading a book, or playing video games in bed. If they do leave their room, they’ll say very little to nothing at all. You might get a wave – but we’re not making any promises with this one here.??

9. The Post-It One

There is always the one roommate that will have a problem with most things and emphasis it with a post-IT note. Meet The Post-IT One. As you make your way to the kitchen on a Friday morning, stop in on a few post-it notes by the fridge. They will read “Please wash your dishes”. “Please take out your trash”. This roommate isn’t out to make friends, oh no. The Post-It One can make it challenging to live with and is known for causing drama. This roommate will do anything to get their point across - posting stickers on your mirrors or on your car?! Stop the madness. At least we’d like to think there’s hope for this one, you guys. Don’t you??

10. Casper

For some, this may be a lucky break because this roommate is only seen a handful of times, if that! Meet Casper: the roommate who is never home.?With this roommate, you have the place all to yourself because they work all the time, or who knows what else they have going on. When you do see them, it’s a quick hello and the time spent is never longer than a few minutes. You my friend, are living alone with this roommate – with a feeling as if you don’t have one.?
