10 Trends in Edge Computing

The team at StartUs Insights produced their list of Top 10 Edge Computing Trends in 2024, and three of them—edge AI, edge data centers, and edge analytics—deserve particular attention.

First, by deploying AI at the edge, you gain the ability to deliver real-time data processing and analysis with lowerer latency and bandwidth requirements. Additionally, the use of AI algorithms to enhance the efficiency and accuracy of data analysis helps produce quicker insights and actionable intelligence at the edge, closer to your end users.

Next, this increases the need for distributed data centers—compute, chiefly, but certainly storage and networking—adjacent to edge devices. With them, enterprises can move data storage, processing, and analysis closer to where the data is generated. This enables efficient scaling and allows for distributed computational and storage resources across multiple locations, reducing the strain on centralized data centers. This is what Akamai has been building with our Gecko initiative.?

And third, when it comes to advanced analytics techniques like stream processing and intelligent clustering, edge data analytics overcomes the obstacles of latency and bandwidth by processing and analyzing data locally. Edge analytics can enhance decision-making capabilities by producing contextually relevant insights and, paired with AI, motivating proactive measures.

Check out the full list, as well as some interesting examples of the three highlighted above:
