10 Top Facts About Cape Verde

Cape Verde was a little-known archipelago off the west coast of Africa just a few short years ago. But, as tourists came trickling in, it was noticed as the next emerging hotspot by industry experts and it has thrived as an Island of economic stability based on this influx of tourism ever since.

With the idyllic holiday destination ever more present on the world stage, it’s always good to look at things that make this collection of ten Islands so unique.

1. Go diving or snorkelling

Explore beneath the waves of Cape Verde – one of the best places to do this is on the island of Sal, with many opportunities presenting themselves from Santa Maria beach. Beautiful warm water and so clear.

2. Spot turtles

This is the third most important loggerhead turtle nesting site in the world, where the turtles come to lay their eggs in the sand. The best time to see them is at night, especially between June and September.

3. Chill on the beach

Well known for its numerous beaches, Cape Verde boasts several great coastal spots to choose from, but among the finest are Santa Maria Beach on Sal, Praia de Chaves on Boa Vista and Santa Monica, Caribbean standard beeches only a few hours away from home.

4. Climb a volcano

For those not satisfied with relaxing by the pool or on the beach all day, why not stick on your hiking boots. There a number of trails to attempt on the island, including Pico do Fogo – Cape Verde’s highest peak.

5. Go kite surfing

Cape Verde provides a fantastic range of water sports, but among the most exciting and rewarding are wind sports. Some of the top wind surfer visit here every year.

6. Go horse riding

Race through the surf on horseback, hair blown away by the wind, whilst enjoying the sights, sounds and culure of Cape Verde.

7. Quad biking

For those that like adventure, quad bikes tours are another great way to explore the islands. This is our favourite, had a great time back in December, when we last visited Sal.

8. Visit Sal’s Salt Mines

For many years the island was a centre for salt mining, which is also where the name Sal (salt) comes from. One of the real thrills of a visit comes in bathing – or floating – in the salt ponds. Another fantastic day out, you are in a different world.

9. Try your hand at fishing

Fishing is extremely popular in Cape Verde, with many of the islands offer guided fishing trips. Various types of fishing are on offer, from rock fishing and deep sea fishing, to big game fishing and surf casting. From boat to plate in a matter of hours, just so fresh.

10. Stroll around Santa Maria

A melting pot of cultures, Santa Maria, on the island of Sal, is a colourful and atmospheric place to explore. There are two worlds here; in the day time full of tourists and locals going around their daily business and shopping, but in the evening the street are closed off to cars to create a fun and buzzing place to party!
