10 Tips for Setting Goals
'Setting goals is the first step in turning the invisible into the visible.' ~ Tony Robbins
At the beginning of every year, many of us create New Year’s resolutions. We think about what we did or didn’t accomplish last year and create new hopes and dreams for the new year.
Unfortunately, not everyone knows the difference between a resolution and a goal. Also, few people understand how to set goals and achieve them successfully. According to the Statistic Brain Research Institute, only 9.2% of all people ever feel that they are successful in achieving their New Year’s resolution and 42% give up after the first month.
I think there is a way to make goals happen. If you’re looking to save money this year, or achieve some level of self improvement, we can turn those resolutions into goals and achieve them successfully.
Here are my 10 tips on how to achieve your goals:
- Align your goals with your purpose. When you set your goals, go for your deepest dreams, desires and passions. You are more likely to achieve your goals if you are motivated within. Set goals aligned with your soul and purpose.
- Write your goals down and schedule dates for their completion and evaluation. I believe this is the key to success with achieving your goals. Having them somewhere that you see them every day will help to reiterate their significance and increase your chances of achieving them.
- Set goals that are specific. A goal has a much greater chance of being accomplished if it deals with specific facts and events. If your directions are vague, they can be misconstrued and easily skipped over. Specific goals provide detail and precision to your training program.
- Set goals that are measureable. If you identify what you will see, hear and feel when you reach your goal, you can feel as if you have accomplished something tangible. In order to achieve effective goal setting, you should break your goal down into measurable elements.
- Set goals that are attainable. While there is nothing wrong with aiming high, it is important to ensure the goal is really right for you and your lifestyle. If you don’t have the time, money or experience to achieve something, you will be setting yourself up to fail.
- Set goals that are realistic. To be realistic, your goal must represent an objective in which you are willing and able to work towards. You are the only one that can determine just how big your goal should be, but you should ensure there is a realistic chance that you are able to achieve it.
- Set goals that are timely. Every set goal should have a time frame. Without a time frame, there is no sense of urgency. Make a tentative plan of everything you do and the time in which you want to do it. Having deadlines will help you and your team work towards them..
- Be accountable. Telling your family and friends about your goals may give you the responsibility you need. If you remain accountable in your everyday life, you will also surround yourself with encouragement from those who are following your progress.
- Ask for help. Asking for help is nothing to be ashamed of, as improving your skills may be the thing that sets you apart. Getting help may come in a variety of different forms: from asking a friend, to developing a mentor that will help get you one step closer to achieving your goals.
- Continuously review your progress. As time goes on, our goals are constantly changing and evolving. The end result may not look anything like what we initially set out to do; however, this can sometimes be a good thing.
When done properly goal setting can be a powerful process for thinking about your ideal future and turning this vision into reality.
Goal setting helps you choose where you want to go in life and when you know exactly what you want, you can focus your efforts.
