10 tips to save bandwidth and NOT break the internet

With the internet under increasing pressure with the mass migration from office to home, next week could be even more challenging with the school kids joining in! Here are 10 things you can do to reduce bandwidth usage for the good of everyone. #WorkingFromHome #SaveBandwidth

1/ Watch TV in Standard Definition (SD) not High Definition (HD) if you have the option. This reduces Netflix from 3GB per hour to 0.7GB per hour, a huge saving. https://bit.ly/3a6Zucs

2/ Change your software and phone app settings to save video bandwidth including simple things like turning off autoplay on videos. https://bit.ly/2xeQwLr

3/ Reduce your Spotify bandwidth by downloading tracks offline at quieter times of day, checking your quality settings and preventing autoplay.  https://bit.ly/2QxyVoU

4/ Go old school and have a retro tech day with the kids: Blu-Rays, DVDs, Videos // Nintendo, PlayStation, Sega, Spectrum // CDs, Vinyl, Cassettes. Raid the attic! #HistoryLesson

5/ Stop plastering animated GIFs all over Slack, Teams, WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter, those funny little chuckles are HUNGRY for bandwidth. This is one area where using more video would actually be a huge improvement! https://bit.ly/3daeubv

6/ Conserve bandwidth during web conferences by reducing screen sharing, never play video over a screen share, and don't use webcam and screenshare simultaneously.  https://bit.ly/2xdpVym

7/ Use video in your web conferences just to say hello and goodbye but switch to audio for the main meeting. #WorkingFromHome #SaveBandwidth

8/ Don't just automatically default to web conferencing and virtual classrooms. Consider low bandwidth collaboration options, there are loads of great ways to work together online!  https://bit.ly/2QySw8h

9/ Adjust the video quality in your web conferencing app by disabling HD and turning off video by default when joining meetings.  https://bit.ly/2QtStuf

10/ If you're a Microsoft organisation then get the heck off Skype for Business and move to Teams, it's much more efficient and better quality calls too.  https://bit.ly/2IYB9cX

Good luck staying at home everyone! Have you got any other bandwidth saving tips?? #WorkingFromHome #SaveBandwidth

Thanks Mark!

For what it’s worth if you are over 40 and have a face for radio like me you will appreciate how turning off HD on video calls makes you look about 10 years younger...
