Thijs Sprangers
Driver of Change & Growth - Impact, Entrepreneurship & Business Development
We had a lot of fun and debate putting together a killer program for Lean Innovation Summit Rotterdam As November 12 is nearing I will share the sessions I am personally really looking forward to, because they're new, unique or unexpected. And 5 other tips on making the best of your day.
Read on to find out what David Hasselhoff has to do with secrets of innovation. And if you haven't signed up yet, look for a special offer.
TIP 1: WORLD’S FIRST CONNECTED TUGBOAT: DIGITAL DESIGN FOR CRITICAL SITUATIONS - Bart Versteeg (Damen Shipyards/Van Berlo)
Kicking it off Rotterdam style: today’s huge container vessels can only make port thanks to powerful tugboats. These dangerous harbour operations require high precision control for the crew. Find out how VanBerlo and Damen Shipyards designed an award winning innovative adaptive digital interface on the world’s first connected tugboat. Learn how to assume control of innovation by avoiding vendor lock-in in a complex industry. How to design for critical situations by doing extensive research and co-creation. How to create minimal viable products that are designed for customization and scale instead of limited, static functionality.
Experience level: Transformation - Access: All - Time: 11:55 - Room 7
TIP 2: HOW TIKKIE BECAME THE #1 P2P PAYMENT APP WITH OVER 6M USERS - Nelleke Harmse (ABN Amro Tikkie)
How a simple solution can become a national standard. Introduced only 3 years ago, the app for sending split payments to friends (yes, going Dutch :-) has become so popular that the word "Tikkie" has been added to Van Dale official dictionary of the Dutch language as a synonym for payment request. Nelleke Harmse was the lead designer of Tikkie and will take you behind the scenes. Learn how David Hasselhoff was the #1 reason behind their success and 3 other secret ingredients that have never been shared before!
Experience level: Acceleration - Access: All - Time: 15:40 - Room 7
TIP 3: CAN CORPORATES DELIVER SUCCESSFUL PLATFORMS - Hugo Raaijmakers (PA Consulting)
Platform Innovation is the specialty of one of the most experienced innovators in The Netherlands. You don't see him on stage often. I had the pleasure to work with Hugo Raaijmakers at ING's Global Innovation team. With a PhD in Digital Transformation, 10 years of innovation at Philips and 5 years at ING he was co-responsible for setting up two of the most advanced innovation machines. First time on stage in his new role as Head of Platform Innovation at PA Consulting, Hugo shares his vision on platform innovation and experiences in global corporate innovation and transformation. More about the session here.
Experience level: Acceleration - Access: Gold - Time: 14:30 - Room 1
TIP 4: 8 MINS TO BUILD A BRAND, WEBSITE & CHATBOT. GO! - Regan Kirk (Growth Tribe)
The best rated session at our last conference in Berlin! Regan Kirk kills it in a high-speed training and makes experimentation SIMPLE. Highly recommended for anyone involved in corporate innovation to get an understanding of the T-shaped skillset needed for innovation at scale. You can talk very long about digital innovation and create endless powerpoint slides but nothing beats hacking together your experiment and sending customers to see it validated with conversion. Or not - which is also positive! As you will the rest of the day to run three more experiments. Let Regan show you how it's done.
Experience level: Acceleration - Access: Gold - Time: 13:05 - Room: 6
TIP 5: HOW INNOVATION IS LEADING OV-FIETS TO 5 MILLION RIDES IN 2019 - Remmert Stipdonk (INFO) & Peter van de Pol (NS)
Being a heavy user myself, its interesting to get the backstage story from this super popular public bike program. Initiatives for bike sharing have been around for decades in The Netherlands before the semi-public Dutch Railways invested in a massive solution that became extremely successful in train-bike connected commuting. Remmert and Peter will share with us how the team navigated through the corporate environment of NS, achieving 30% annual growth and innovating the core of the bike-sharing service.
Experience level: Transformation - Access: All - Time: 13:05 - Room: 7
---- Ok so much for my session tips. Ofcourse 40+ sessions include many many more interesting roundtables, case-studies and workshops with Alexander Osterwalder, Brant Cooper, Lina Yassin and other innovation experts. Please see the full program for more info!

TIP 6: SWIPE TO MEET PEERS
Lean Innovation is a community event! At our last Summit in Berlin, 300 matches were made using GRIP matchmaking. GRIP is the first and most advanced AI-powered event networking solution currently in the global market. Benefits of using a matchmaking service at the event? 1) Make connections with significant people you would not have met otherwise 2) Expand your professional network and 3) create business opportunities with other event goers. Read more here.
You will be invited to Matchmaking once you've registered.
TIP 7: CHECK OUT THE UNCONFERENCE
The Summit audience usually holds just as many interesting experiences as the speakers on stage. Let's all share and learn! For the 3rd time the Unconference is a part of the program, this time as a side event initiated by the Rotterdam lean community led by Firmhouse.
Join at CIC Rotterdam on November 11th 13:00-16:30 with separate registration.
TIP 8: ROTTERDAM'S FINEST STARTUPS
Get to know Rotterdam's finest startups! The Startup Tour companies each present a story that is related to the summit themes and followed by a panel and Q&A. Participation is limited to 80 attendees and is first-come-first served. Participating Startup/Scaleups are Helloprint, Decidee, 42workspace & vakanties.nl
Join at 42 WORKSPACES on November 11th 16:00-19:00 GOLD Pass access (limited availability). More information here.
TIP 9: CHOOSE TO MATCH YOUR EXPERIENCE LEVEL
Through organising 6 summits and 50 meetups all over Europe and studying the data we gathered about visitors and their challenges, we've learned that innovators have very different needs depending on their experience level and the stage of transformation of their companies. In the Summit Programme we've for the first time tagged all sessions to one of 3 experience levels: 1. Foundation 2. Acceleration 3. Transformation.
Make sure to choose the sessions matching to the state of your company and your own experience history. Bring colleagues and split up if you see to many sessions you like.
TIP 10: COME BY TRAIN AND ENJOY ROTTERDAM
Travelling by train is always good. The Summit location De Doelen is just 5 mins walking or 1 metro stop from the Rotterdam Central train station. The train station is 30 mins from Schiphol Airport and has direct hispeed connections to Paris and London. Extra plus is that you get to see the beautifull new Rotterdam Train Station.
